Textured Response

By miraclemiles on March 15, 2020 10:19 pm

I think a little texture and nuance is always welcome in communication (including music) and responses to all situations. After polishing up some old recordings for the past few weeks, it felt good to start and finish this piece from scratch this week. Set out thinking I wanted deep housey vibe, would this count as that, what would I even call this?  Started playing around with a new tongue drum sample instrument from Brian Funk, Moon Guitar from Spitfire, and one of my fave sampled instruments that came with a Live pack -  Pipe and Tube Delay Percussion (an ABS pipe percussive sample, put into chain of devices, and able to produce everything from drones to tuned percussive sounds. Kept drums pretty simple, but had a lot of fun with the timbales - those are a Live pack sample instrument as well. So I had fun just playing around and recording a lot throughout the week then started editing this weekend. Added the vocal sounds last minute this morning. Started making up words and ended up repeating "textured response" a lot, so kept that bit. Processed through various vocoder patches on the Mininova then did some chopping on the Push, which is always fun times. Wondering if these vocals are worth keeping, do they add anything to this?

I vote for keeping the vocals.  They add to the overall trippy vibe.  It defies easy categorization but I would say some kind of acid-house-tribal fusion with some extra pixie dust sprinkled on top.  I think I even detected some latin rhythms in there towards the end.  So add a little salsa to the mix as well?  Anyway, it's awesome unique stuff.

LOL that was actually pretty easy categorization!  That's EXACTLY what this is!  Great track, the vocals are great, and very important that I can't actually discern them because this is the kind of music I really want to vibe out to without paying close attention to any detail, I just want to swim in it and float heart

Ha! Nailed it! Salsa Tribal Acid House with Pixie Dust works for me. Thanks much for that. Yeah, more trippy vibes for a pretty surreal week.

Yep, easy indeed! Thanks for checking it out. Time to go float away for sure!

On the contrary I also think the vocals sit very well in the compo, the rhythmic chatter in the intro especially; it makes it feel like a reunion, like musicians in an orchestra getting ready, then the tabla (it sounds like a tabla, might be wrong!) hits and everyone follows in a dance. The harp is just wonderful, there's something quite whimsical about the whole track heart I like this headspace a lot!

Those bassy kicks really sit nicely in the mix.  Def feeling those trippy vocals that almost bordesr industrial (skinny puppy) and then goes into more deep housey dreamy feels.

Nice percs. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals as they are now, but they do remind me of Seek the Sublime you did in 2018.

Sweet, glad you like this headspace. Creating a kind of whimsical or just daydreaming spacing out getting lost in thought vibe was what I was going for. Your story's right on, and yep the tabla brings things up to dance time!

Thank you! I thought about trying to get the kicks to punch through more, but I don't think that would be right. Skinny Puppy, haven't heard them in long time! Yeah was going for dreamy for sure. Cheers!

Thanks for reference to 2018 track, thats cool to hear. You're on top of things! Yeah, I feel like vocals need a tweak or two here and there too still. I may actually go back and do a new version on this one!

Damn, I am so behind on listening to your tunes. The textures in this are really nice, hazy twinkly chorus stuff and delicate percussion. I like the crazy vocoder chord too. And solid bass!

Thanks much, appreciate the comment. Glad you liked those bits, good to hear that. I feel like this is a vibe I could fall into more.
