Object Memory

By miraclemiles on September 23, 2018 9:40 pm

I think the words I improvised for this were something like "objects give memories," which I think they do. Perhaps one of the few benefits of the many material things that seem to accumulate around us. Music gives me more memories. On the second "verse" it sounds like I said "kill the nap time plan." I don't think I said that, but its kinda funny.

This once came about by happy accident. I was working on something else, then in searching for a certain synth patch on another project, I started absent mindedly playing around with an Ableton Wavetable patch and step sequencing melodies by randomly picking notes and steps on the Push. Then played other notes on top of the steps, and decided to run with that. This has about three of those random sequences that intertwine throughout. Added some other synths from an Afro DJ Mac Prophet samples and tried to get some moody, filtered percussion going. Sprinkled in some bass, also from Wavetable and a few texture bits. This one kept me interested enough to definitely kill the naptime plans.

Fun stuff.  It's interesting to see what maybe seeps out of your subconscious when you improvise.  Kill that nap time plan.  Kill it dead!  smile

Sounds quite mystical, like a secret arcane ritual, set to the light of the fire under a big iron pot where a magic potion is brewing. Very inspired, great track big_smile

Great contrast between the muffled bass and that crisp percussion.

Bwahahaha! It's funny too because they referenced this scene in the latest Venture Bros season, good times!

I'm jealous of your ability to improvise words. Everytime I try nothing comes out. I think my word brain and my music brain are not connected or something. Anyway, this is kinda dark and sinister, but in a gentle way.

It's cool how the push can change your creation process a bit.  The wavetable sounds excellent and this def has a mystical_mysterious feel to it.

Yes, there are interesting things lurking in there for sure! Every weekend I think I need a nap ... then I make music instead.

OOOHH - that is an amazing image, I love it. I didn't have the whole darker, arcane ritual vibe in mind as I created this, but like the other comment said, its amazing what comes out of that subconcious. I'm channeling my ancient druid ancestors! Thanks for listening and for that great creative comment!

Thanks much! Good to remember the power of contrast!

hahaha - there's a secret ritual indeed! I wonder what I'd compose if I tried to channel that specifically. A little scared to find out!

Thank you, I love that part " ...in a gentle way." My guess is any attempt at dark and sinister I make would end up being a little gentle. Yeah, I guess I'm lucky I can make up the words. My strategy: listen to the part over and over, then just mumble gibberish a lot, then sometimes the gibberish sounds like words, or something will catch my eye my cluttered music room and I get a prompt.

Thanks and yes I hear you and agree about the Push. I credit that instrument with pretty much guiding and inspiring my whole creation process. I wasn't creating my own full songs until I got a Push 1, then all of a sudden I kind of could. That Wavetable patch started with a preset put together by pATCHES and included with this pack: https://www.afrodjmac.com/blog/roundwavetable
