Meter Reader

Made in response to this week's Disquiet Junto 0567: Three Meters. The Assignment: Make music in 5/8, 6/8, and 7/8 time signatures.

Most of the time I end up making songs in good old 4/4 time, so this sounded like a fun challenge. My instinct was to play in these meters on the drums first. Played some patterns on drums and the tongue drum. Also played vibraphone sounds on the e-drums. Then in Live, converted some of what I physically played to other midi tracks and tried some new sounds. I still think I could find some other sounds to get this to sound like what I want, but time's up for the week. Also played a few other melodies on the Push using various sounds. So I had some parts in those 3 meters, then did some arranging: started in 7, jump to 5, back to 7, middle part in 6, then end with the 5 to 7's again. I found 7 was the hardest to feel and groove in. This was fun to do, I think it inspired me to try and do some other meters more often in the future.

1:40 to 2:30, awesome!

the middelpart is the best. good challange.

It does seem like a fun challenge and you got some good results here.  It really starts to get an upbeat and joyous vibe to me as it goes on.

Excellent sounding drums especially on those rides and snares.   Nice fx on the distorted synth as well.  Those rides with the kick/snare are super addictive.  Nice work!

Vertigo all the way! The sounds around 1:56 is like a chaotic choir. In that section around 2:28, we can hear your drums clearly. Great sound. I love the kick and the details we can get from the snare.

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah, the middle part is my fave, I should expand that more. I enjoy parts of the melodies in other parts too though.

I love a good challenge, something I probably wouldn't try on my own, usually learn something from it so that's worth it. Glad you felt a bit of joyous vibe, I was getting that too, which did give me a little joy.

ha, I see what you mean actually! Had some fun with the Voice Box Live pack, figured I'd bring some chaos to the choir practice. Glad you liked drum sound, yeah they get a little buried in mix earlier but middle for the win.

Great drums with lots of interesting sounds and melodies, like how there are sections with heavy distortion and then you get little moments that are distortion free.

Sounds beautifully fluid, first 5/6/7 i ever heard which felt infectiously dancey big_smile Got a wondrously dreamy feel to it, too, noice one! heart

Mind blown. Couldn't do it! The track keeps building and ends strong. Beautiful outro.

oh wow - what a great challenge!

getting some kind of cool Tortoise vibes in bits here!
