Make the Abstract Pop (Ableton creative challenge submission)

By miraclemiles on November 11, 2018 10:11 pm

This a slightly different edit of my submission for the Ableton Loop conference sample challenge. The challenge was to take a 23 second sample and make a 90 second track from it in 12 hours. It took place this Friday, and Andrew Huang and other panelists talked about their submissions and others at a conference session. I watched live stream of it and was interesting to see what people did. For this version I added the original sample source as the first 8 bars here, then my version starts. I also added quick vocal and some vocal scratching sounds to this edit that was not in the original submission. With exception of vocal, my submission is made entirely of the original source material. I used some the percussive sounds for drums as well as the melody and bass tracks. Then I used some of the sparkly ambience for other tracks. Some filtering, EQ, and Echo. My technique was mainly slicing bits up using Simpler device in Ableton and then playing around on Push. I usually do some of that in my tracks, but not whole tracks. Was good learning experience.

An interesting process and an interesting result.  It's always neat to see what people can do with samples.

Great outcome! I like the very melodic percs you created, a nice tribal dance feel that made me dance around in my chair with the rhythm smile

Excellent results! I thought of doing the challenge, but I spend too much time second-guessing. ::)

Really cool challenge.  I listened first before reading and the track really holds up.  The percussion sounds stand out and are very compelling.  They match up well with the rhythmic vocals. Well done!

shucks, I should have joined you on the challenge!

this is really cool - great groove.

agreed.  love the vocals, you just need 26 people chanting them

that dark breakdown though

Ah cool! Would love to do this challenge... great stuff

Thanks! Yeah, samples may be the way to get the most unique and innovative.
