Holiday Music Lessons

Henry just wants to learn Greensleeves. He's got some issues though. He can't decide whether to play his cornet or the drum set. Little Lena is called upon to accompany on piano. She gets the arrangement a bit mixed up in the beginning. They have a little fun, then they get it right. The teacher Jean Pierre is tough, but fair. In the end, they all have a laugh. Greensleeves is good to go! Time for Eggnog ya'll!

Ok, so the real story: Every Weekly Beats year I do a song sampling my daughter playing a holiday piano song, usually one for her winter recital. So we recorded her playing some Greensleeves, classic. I asked her make it swing. Nailed it. Then I played drums along with that. Added in some bass and extras in Ableton. Wanted some fun voice samples. Super happy I quickly found this one on samplesswap.org, called "laughing-record-vaudeville-routine-1923." In some ways it kind of fit our day of playing around.

One more week! Wow!

Love the concept, and can't wait to check out the video!

Thanks! Just added the video. Getting silly with some old videos and gifs in there ...
Cheers!

That's a really cool WB tradition to sample your daughter each year.  I like how there are definitely some snippets where you can clearly hear Greensleeves, but then at other times it warps into something completely unrecognizable.  The video is a lot of fun, too.

'tis is the season to be silly!

Thank you! I initially thought I'd change it all around so there was no recognizable Greensleeves. In the first section I just made the measures backwards, bar 8 is first, ended with bar 1, it kind of sounds ok that way! But then I got lazy and kept the actual song in the last half. Kind of fit the story of the students getting it wrong, then finally getting it right.

Yes indeed! Thanks for checking it out smile

That was really fun!
"Should we do it again?"
"NEVER!"

Awesome, glad you got to do this project with your daughter, great video clips and that vocal sample fits it so nice, have a great X-mas, see you next week for the finale!

That's some swing into those green sleeves and the video is quite a delight. Merry Christmas.

great job in every dimention. The videocutting, sampling, playing cool beats, ect.. it has a bit of monty python style in it. Mery christmas to all of you, too.

That's a wonderful track here! The light vaudeville like vibe, the general business and randomness of the track. This is what childhood feels like, beautiful concept and great execution. This is a delight.

haha! I actually did say no after that last one too! It was pretty good, and I felt bad asking her to play it so many times!  That's more Tomokos job right? lol.

Yes - love this: "This is what childhood feels like" ... hadn't thought of that, but so true. Fun to get to be a kid again. So glad you liked, thanks for checking it out!

Awesome idea and the video was fun to watch along with it.  The drums sounded really good with the piano in the mix too.

Thanks, glad to hear this. Mix was a little easier with drums and only piano that it was with a bunch of tongue drum tracks like the finale week. I know I have a bit to learn about recording and mixing live drums. Cheers!
