High Desert Myths

By miraclemiles on October 16, 2022 11:55 pm

There are areas where I live in Washington state that could be called high desert. Dry, rocky, scattered ponderosa pines trees and scrubby undergrowth. Burrowing creatures. I think places develop their own stories and mythology. Walking around out in these areas, I can begin to imagine some of them.

Created this song from recording of a jam with Creatures Once bandmate Monstrosus. I kept what we did, and today I added some live drums and vocals for some fun. Not super happy with the vox, but it was an experiment, and keeping in for this version. I didn't have the high desert landscape in mind when I made this at first, but maybe something about the bass in this, or some words that popped into mind put it in my head. Contemplating the high desert and its big expansive stories, with some more beneath the surface. Now time to go walk around our there in this unusually warm October.

Deserts are magical places in my experience.  This track takes us on a nice journey through mysterious environs and I think we might stumble on some peyote along the way.

They are! Something being on the borderline if life and death perhaps? Thanks for being on the journey. We did indeed stumble on some peyote out there.

I love the high desert concept. I often think of the influence that the mighty Palouse has on our aesthetics living here. awesome fat sounds, love the guitar tones and chunky drums in the beginning. sounding a bit David Lynch with that aggressive pitch shift on the vocals. that breakdown is wild too! I'm digging all the delicate textures that made it into the soup, I think with a strong bassline to ground this that they could build off of, this could really shine. tons of potential here.

This track is like a showreel for awesome sonic ideas.  Really grabbed my attention with the Hyper Light Drifter-ish opening, also the transition into 00:54 and the breath-catcher + outro around 05:04.

So many interesting moments in here. This would be a total feast to sample. Reminds me of the early Meat Beat Manifesto work. Really surprising twists here and there, really. Mindblowing

Great experiment. This goes into crazy territory. So much to love. The section at 1:25 with the weird synth scream that opens into delicate arps. The freaky voice adds a high level of spice on the top. Trippy and chaotic. This is the music one hears when they are stuck in the desert, desperately hungry, and chose the wrong mushroom to chew on.

wow. so much going on here. it is a trippy and monstergroovy thing again. there are so many little breaks and hooks in the arrangement. fantastic mixture. the dubby beat is hot, so the desert can not be far away.

I love the distortion on the synths and vocals, got a warbly roughness that reminds me of warm sandy wind hitting the face smile
And the track goes so many innovative places, such a special sound and atmosphere you’ve built up here, feels like an epic maze where i could get lost for hours in all the detail heart

Big time crunchy trip hop vibes that gave me some Tricky feels especially with the vocals.  Really cool outro with the dark and deep piano.

The pull of the mighty Palouse. Thanks for the comment, glad you liked some of the flavor in this soup! Yeah I see the potential too, something pulls.

Thank you so much! Yeah it's kind of one idea after another, with an attempt to make it whole. Appeciate hearing the parts you liked, will help when doing another edit!

A lot happening in this trip for sure! Love "Monstergroovy", that's a great word! The desert beckons ... though maybe not again until seasons change.

Glad you came around to get lost in this maze with us for a few minutes! Love that it conjured a wam and sandy wind, that's the journey! Thanks!
