Helpless

I released a new EP this week. It has three songs featuring longtime collaborator AM Faulks on guitar and keys. Working on that reminded me we had some jam session recordings I haven't turned into songs yet, so I went digging for those. This session was called "Funky Jesus." I remembered it instantly. He was playing on the keys and we thought his riff sounded like it could be a gospel churchy kind of thing. He even did a little vocals in the session, saying "walk with me Jesus" kind of trying to channel a preacher. Was all for laughs as neither of us are Christians or participants in organized religion. I really liked all the keyboard playing so decided to turn this into something. Didn't want to do an ironic religious thing. Wanted to be more serious. Made up some words about love, partnership, commitment basically. If there's anything close to god and religion I can think of, it's love. Shout out to my wife of many years who helps me feel the love and sing stuff like this! And shout out to the awesome playing of AM Faulks - it's a mystery where he gets this stuff from, but glad I get to hear it.

You can check the Pirate Circus EP out on Bandcamp, Spotify or all the streaming places. Some track notes on our website, with more being added regularly. As the third release I've done, I've learned a few things. If any of you have questions about releasing your work out on all the streaming services, reach out, I'd love to answer questions. I've also been talking with a few people about going in on a label account with the distibutor, so can release unlimited artists.

Thanks for listening. Two more weeks. Can't believe it!

This track has a great funk to it. The middle section is fantastic. How do you create that vocal effect? It's really unique, and it sounds great.

Yeah this track really does have a nice fun vibe to it.  I can hear a little bit of the religious overtones for sure.  Both in the organ breakdown and the "take me down to the river" line.  I think I might have hear a stray "Walk with me Jesus" in there still, although perhaps I imagined it.

I actually got an email notification about your new ep because I had downloaded one of your earlier releases, so I downloaded this one, too.  I've put stuff up on bandcamp for a few years now, but I haven't ventured into spotify or any of the other streaming services yet.  I might just take you up on your offer to ask you some questions.

The organ is really nice on this track. Funky and smooth! What effect are you using on the vocals? The guitar lines in the background are simple and nice. This is a very cool journey.

Thanks very much, glad you liked! Middle section vocals were done through Talkbox Synth pedal by TC Helicon ... it was made for a guitar to modulate define the pitch and character of your voice like the vintage talkboxes do, and has a few sounds. You can use other inputs to modulate though, and I was using a synth patch on the organelle this time. The earlier vocals are through the pedal too, but with the built in autotune effect, no other alteration. I'm going to make a video about it some day on my youtube channel (Creatures Once), showing all its sounds modulated by different synths.

Ha, good ear. There is a subtle stray "Jesus" in there! Yeah, couldn't resist some take me down to the river. I really just like going down to rivers. Thanks for checking it out.

Many thanks for checking out the release on Bandcamp! Happy to chat anytime about releasing stuff. The contact link here on WB is up to date with my email!

Thanks, yeah the organ is star of the show! Vocals were all through the talkbox synth pedal I mentioned in the reply above. Some autotune in main sections, and some effected vocals in the middle. I'm liking the pedal so far for vocal effects. Have been on the hunt for something like that a long time, something easy to work with for live performances. Check me out on Youtube (under band name Creatures Once) will have video there demoing that pedal in the near future.

100% agree with you, the greatest religion is love, great find with this session, has a nice laid back feel yet also some funky grooves, always appreciate your vocals.

Awesome ... amen to that! Thanks!

Feeling those uplifting vibes.  Really enjoyed the epiano lines along with that wah guitar.
