Don't Be Tense (live session dub)

By miraclemiles on November 13, 2016 9:14 pm

This came from a live jam with bass player and myself on drums. This is second or third time running through these parts we came up with on the fly. I didn't edit, quantize, warp or anything, so this is totally live feel, flaws and all. Bass was direct in to soundcard, tracking in Ableton. Drums had overhead mic (which picked up bass too), and a kick mic, that I think I should move from outside the drum to inside next time. I duplicated the  audio drum track, added effects to one track, and did same with bass. Converted drum to midi which turned out pretty accurate and put that on a vintage sampled kit device to compensate for recording of mine. One bass track got Amp, and a Wah rack, other has Amp and delay. One drum track got Corpus on Drum to Bass synth preset which is coo, can't wait to play with that more. I thought about playing some more parts on the Push, but decided to impose the limitation of using the notes that were played live. So I added a synth track, converted the bass part to midi, dropped it on the synth and added arpeggiator at varying rates. Then added various other FX throughout. Added some random vocal samples from sampleswap that I had, didn't play with those much but did a little pitching and reversing.

Nice funky sound and the various effects are sweet.  Really cool track.

Thanks very much! Glad it came out listenable after all the odd tweaks in a short time. I can't wait to take the main recording and evolve it into more over time.

Yeah, that bass is funky.
I really like those slightly disharmonic synthmelodies. I 've tried one or two times to play something like this to m hiphop beats... These are masterfull!

Hey thanks very much! The synth melodies are actually the bassline, converted to midi in Ableton, then I added an arpeggiator effect and just changed the rate on it a lot so its very random sounding.
