Distant Rise

By miraclemiles on March 20, 2022 10:03 pm

Made this for the week's Disquiet Junto project 0533. The theme of this week was to remix any of this year's previously recorded asynchronous trio contributions. I downloaded about 10 - 12 of these submissions from both week 1 (the first individual parts), to week 3 of 3 (three people's parts together to complete the trio). I was excited to see this one pop up in my inbox! This asynchronous collaboration has been so inspiring. I could do collaborations like this (and remixes of the results) for many, many weeks.
Time constraint dictated process this week. I had about four hours on Sunday. Did a quick browse through week 3 songs, playing some semi-randomly, downloaded a few. Then jumped to week 1 and downloaded a few more. Realized I had so much, didn’t spend time looking at week 2. Started using Ableton’s convert to Simpler and slicing in the various ways, then playing around on the Push. Left a couple samples unsliced and looped sections, some time warping. Had fun playing around and discovering the magik, letting things emerge. Very much finding the unique, diverse trees, flora and fauna without knowing the forest.

Looking forward as usual to hearing everyones music this week! I have some catching up to do.  Thanks!

Sounds like an interesting project.  It's neat that this came from different source materials.  It holds together really well and feels like it all belongs.

Nice use of all that source material.  Got some Massive Attack vibes early in the track with that low distant drone in the background with the deep kick and hats.

What an intriguing challenge: https://disquiet.com/2022/03/17/disquiet-junto-project-0533-numbers-magik/.  I'd never heard of it before now, but it seems like pretty heady stuff:

In a recent project, Junto members produced, over the course of three weeks, a large collection of asynchronous trios. In the first week, people recorded solos. In the second week, someone turned the solo into a duet, adding a second track but leaving room for a third. In the final week, someone completed a duet by adding that final piece of the puzzle.

Wow.

+2 for making both challenges this week. tongue

Knowing this comes from such disparate sources, it's impressive how you've made it sit together with a common thread. Something very cool starts happening around 1 minute in the lead up to the drums. Disquieting second half once the main drums are gone, but then it slowly threads its way back together again. Particularly like the vocal-driven outro section, pure bliss.

I keep the comment short. This mix is lyseric, if you know what I mean.

Oh thanks, I appreciate hearing that, it was was lot of source to try and hold together.

Ah, Massive Attack, totally, I hear that. Love them so much. Now I wanna go listen to them. Thanks for listening!

Hey thanks for checking it out. Yeah that Junto project can get heady. I don't do them all, loved this collaboration series though, and its good source of inspiration and meeting new producers for sure. Thanks for checking this out! Added more links to description above now.

Thank you! So glad to hear it sounded like it fit together Ok. I like taking a bunch of samples and making them fit. I almost didn't keep that disquieting middle part, but I like the juxtaposition it brought. I love that vocal bliss parts too glad you did! I added links to vocals I used above, from 33per and most of it from the song by Benn Demole with Fake Genius and Insomnia

Ha, I do know, I would agree, thanks for checking it out.

you must be really good with puzzles!  what a neat piece!

Remarkable how much material there is and how cohesive all of this sounds. That ending where everything comes out and reaveal an out-of-tune tone is badass! heart

That's a really good concept. The track has this buildup that has a dreamy quality, combining so many elements that sound so different yet they work together. Emily's gif there is spot on. All these textures and sound that end up in a new unified result. Very cool Work.

Really like the ebb and flow of this, definitely feels like a journey, impressive with all the different sources of samples yet a cohesive sound to everything.

This is a deep track, lots of layers.   I  believe I could hear something new on each subsequent listen.  Feels like getting dropped off in a foreign land, very cool!

Thank you, yeah piling it all in and hoped for the best! Glad you liked that end, yeah that drone was going underneah the whole time! Kind of added some disonance I suppose. Thought it was bit out of tune, didn't bother me, so kept it.

Thank you! It's weird woking with sounds that were mostly made by others, happy if results can work out. I like this approach to creation though, try and fit all the things!

Thank you, I love a journey in a song, glad this felt like that!

Awesome glad you liked! Love that idea of dropping into foreign land, neat when songs can transport, music is special that way.
