City Life Raft Boogie

By miraclemiles on January 30, 2022 11:58 pm

Week 4! I'm once again in the pattern of thinking about making music all week, but not actually doing it until the weekend. Jobs are annoying. So once again I dug into the archive of half started ideas to get a head start. I had a session with some tongue drum, live drum and mallet sounds recordings. I had recorded midi from the e-drums to record the mallet sounds. So almost all sounds in this tune were recorded by playing the e-drums live and recording the midi, then editing. Treated the tongue drum with Live's spectral devices to turn into a pad like atmosphere, some city backgrounds hum. Then I started using Ableton's chance feature to randomize everything. I almost kept the totally random version, but brought in a more steady beat to keep things grooving. This morning I dropped in samples I had downloaded from the Citizen DJ project, which is a lot of fun. Did some random slices on those in the middle. There's talk of boogie, life rafts, and cities in those old documented recordings, and I like the idea of bouncing on a liferaft down a city streets on a hot day, then of course boogieing. Totally normal day in the city.

Oh I did not know of the Citizen DJ project - what a wonderful initiative! A new tool in the toolbox! I like the voices in the back, it's as if we're walking down the street and can hear people's thoughts as we pass them.

I love the festival of percussions your tracks always are. With their variety of rhythms and tones. Very nice track!

A dizzying cornucopia of rhythms and voices.  I like that title image as well.

Chaotic yet somehow cohesive. Sweet!

I love the way you've used vocal samples. Feels like walking through a city of thoughts.

Great use of effects to create the pad like sound, like that middle section when the vocals get hectic before the boogie sample, I love citizen DJ project, used it a few times last weeklybeats and used it last week

Cool stuff. You always make music edgy, what I really adore. Love this carneval of rhythms. Have to check out this DJ project.

Thank you! I think I first heard of the Citizen DJ project from you, on one of your 2020 tracks, so much appreciated, we can spread the word!

Deep feelin drums and cool use of the vocals.  Excellent stereo fx all around too!

I like the tongue drum elements, controlled use of chance, spectral effects, and cool to hear that kind of time-stretched sound that is introduced at the beginning as a backing texture. Quite hectic and beautiful at the same time.

Oh man, this is awesome.  Absolutely love the sample editing and all the cool stuff going on rhythmically.  Very well done.

Yes, it's great, glad to share it. I think I first heard about it from fellow Weekly Beatist Jason Nijjer in 2020. I want to go explore it some more. Love that idea of walking down the street and hearing these things.  Festival of percussion - that's it! Thanks for joining the festival!

Thanks! I love working with vocal samples, I love this idea of passing sounds on the street, I'd like to play with that more.
