Catalytic Ponderosa

By miraclemiles on April 10, 2022 9:22 pm

Had some tree and car drama this week. Windstorms have been increasing in severity and frequency over the past few years where I'm at in the inland NW of the US. On Monday's storm, I noticed the ground rising, and big cracks forming in the earth around a couple big ponderosa pine trees in my front yard. Got people out to look, and the consensus is they be falling on both my house, and my neighbors house in the next big storm. So now it's a race between the guys with trucks and chainsaws who have busy schedules, and mother nature. Then on Friday night my daughter was in Portland and someone stole the catalytic converter from her Prius. Apparently it's very common, a good thief can get them out in 60 seconds, and sell for scrap metal for a few hundred bucks. Luckily we got it fixed up pretty quick and she made it back home.

Making a song still one of the best parts of the week. So thankfully got to work on this today too. Recorded some tongue drum and messed around with those sounds, layered some loops, a melody or two, the played some live drums with it, added some bass from the circuit and model cycles. Synth from arturias mini moog emulation. Mix is a bit of mud but oh well, it all goes along with the wind in the trees.

Man, sorry to hear about life things. Are you in PNW? (Greeting from Seattle! I'm over here hoping really hard there'll be no storm!) Back when I lived in Oakland, CA had my cat stolen and totaled -- it taught me that car troubles have a weird / unusual effect on my psyche sometimes.

Really enjoyed the track a lot, hopeful funky little ditty -- no storm in sight and sounds like all vehicles are fully operational! (Love the beat around 1:13).

I certainly hope you meant to write "car" not "cat".

I like the festival of percussion there - i could not tell what layer is what but it seems some have effects applied to them, like a light distortion? It can be heard especially around 2:09 - i like that effect, both layering and percussive.

Between the car and the house, this is not fun. I hope you get chainsaw support in time! And if they do come, please make sure to record the sound of the chainsaw as a sample!

Damn, sorry to hear about the tree stuff and hope somebody can get in there and deal with it. The weather has been crazy.  My wife clued me into the catalytic converter theft that is been going on like crazy in Brooklyn and NYC as well. I like the title mashup (but not the source).  Cool tribal vibe. The beat says keep moving forward and don't look back!

Hey, yes, awesome you're in Seattle! Greetings from Spokane. The dry side (kinda weird) side of the state smile Car stuff can be so stressful when we depend on them so much, I drive pretty cheap, older cars mostly, so at least not too bad when things go wrong. Had a car stolen in Portland once, turned up a few miles away still working.
Glad you enjoyed the track, I love your comment about it! I may have to recycle that beat in the middle, my fave part. Yeah, I think I needed to work on something with upbeat hopeful feeling!

Thank you! The chainsaws are in full effect right now. Big job. Scary looking job too when they climb up with all the ropes, don't think I"ll be trying that anytime! Yeah, this changing climate keeps us on our toes. The catalytic converter thing is sweeping the nation, that's wild. Move forward and don't look back -- yes!!

Yes, let's hope there's no cats being stolen! Yeah, some light distortion on the tongue drum, I had really strong at one point, but toned it down. I'll have to play with that again. The chainsaws are buzzing out there right now, the and trees and limbless. Sad, but necessary. Good idea to sample that, I'll have to go do that! Thanks for checking it out!

wow you've had a week! (& your family gah) we are having really bad wind today here in Indiana & those thefts are also happening a lot here too... it's so heartbreaking to loose trees but loosing your house would also be heartbreaking - hope all the work get's wrapped up before the next windstorm!

hope this next week is less eventful for you - this piece is really cool - that drum is so fun - all the layers came together nicely - feels like a nice ponderosa memorial/fixed car/safe daughter celebration

Man that is some week.  I hope things get better for ya soon!  That being said you came through all of that and created a head nodder of a track.  Excellent tongue drum skillz and the overall beat had a sweet groove.

Thank you for the kind words. Love that image. Yeah sad to see the trees go, but had to happen. I"ll have to go plant more somewhere now. This week's been nice and quiet so far, other than the chainsaws cutting down the trees, what a big job that is. Yeah this piece was a celebration  that things going ok, gratitude party. Going to catch up on your songs now!

Thank you, this week much less eventful, just watching the trees be slowly dismantled. Time to go check out some peaceful Tone Matrix tunes now. Glad you liked the groove, wanted a to make a head nodder, in fact, sitting down now to make some tunes, and head nodder groove is on the menu!

A lot going on here but it makes me want to experiment with more sampled sounds

Hope mother nature goes easy on you.  That's no fun with the car, but at least it was easily fixable and things turned out okay.  It'd be nice if people would leave your car alone.  Nice vibe on this track.  Really like the sound of the tongue drum.

Thanks for checking this out and comment! Yep a lot going on, seems I always end up with a lot! Love working with mix of samples and synths.

Thanks! Glad you like the tongue drum sound, I use a it quite a lot these days!

that tree drama was such a shit deal! and the converter thieves!

cool vibe, reminds me of a more blown out maximalist, pine-ier "Cold Breath '79".

Such drama it  was. Now I see stumps and imagine elf villages in them. Someone counted and thought 160 rings on the big boi. This sure does seem blown out, not on purpose I'm sure lol, I'll have to look up Cold Breath 79, thanks man!
