To The Devil

By Michael Morrow on March 22, 2026 11:48 am

I’ve been wanting to write a fight song for some time now, a song to sing when I can feel the spiritual battle that’s going on behind the scenes, a song that sends a clear message to the devil, saying ‘No – you can’t have me.’ Recently I’ve become more and more aware of how hard the devil is working to pull me off course, trying to make me abandon my trust in God. And that has made me realise how consistently God is working to keep me safe from the devil’s traps. If you know Psalm 91 you’ll hear echoes of that song in my song. Psalm 91 describes many terrible dangers, but also gives mind-blowing promises of protection. I believe it’s a psalm about the way God protects us unfailingly from the attacks of the devil. I also want to credit John Newton (writer of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’). His Olney hymn book has some classic lines about prayer making Satan tremble, providing me with great inspiration.

This song took all week to grow into its current form. I couldn’t even think about recording it until late on Saturday night, after I had finished writing it. (Many thanks to Alicia, who listened on Saturday afternoon and pointed out that I’d accidentally copied a pop-song in the pre-chorus!) This week’s recording was done on my phone after our Sunday morning gatherings, while I waited for our even band rehearsal to start.

To The Devil

I know you’re there, hiding in the dark
You whisper words of doubt into my heart
Is that the worst my enemy can do?
You deal in lies, but I am onto you

And I’m not falling for your lies
No, I’m not falling for your lies

You can prowl around like a roaring lion
You can fool the world but you can’t have me
In the shadow of the Almighty God
Underneath his wings I have found my shelter

My foe is strong, but Jesus overcomes
He speaks a word and makes the devil run
Though I am weak, there’s one way I can fight
Here on my knees I make the devil fly

So I’m not afraid of all your lies
No I’m not afraid of all your lies

You can prowl around like a roaring lion…

God keeps sending his angels to carry me
Angels guarding me all my days
God keeps sending his angels to carry me
Angels carry me home

You can prowl around like a roaring lion…
