Only Because He Lives

I was determined to write something different this week, something with energy! The perfect opportunity came when the Kids and Families Pastor at our church asked me to write a theme song for his kids ministry. I spent two days playing with his words and writing an upbeat tune. The problem was that I kept thinking, 'If I could just add a word here, or change that word, or add another phrase between those two phrases, then I'd be able to write a really amazing tune!' I set myself the task of writing exactly the melody I wanted to write, if I had no restrictions, and this new tune felt like it had to be a song about the resurrection of Jesus, and all it means for Christians. Songs have a mind of their own!

He lives, the tomb is empty
He lives, the dead are waking
Hear the voice of Jesus say:
‘Come to me and live’

He lives, he’s raised in glory
He lives, the first of many
Born into a living hope
That is not in vain, only because he lives

He lives
No grave could ever hold him
He sets the captives free
He is our Saviour King

He lives, he lives
He is the resurrection
All those who trust him say
‘We are alive ‘cause Jesus is alive’

Light shines into the darkness
Once blind, our eyes are opened
Drop your chains, run to the King
There is freedom now, only because he lives

He lives…

Why, my heart, your fear?
Death will be no more
Death will be no more
Lift your eyes and see him there
Seated on the highest throne
He is glorified

He lives…

I really like the muted acoustic throughout. I think adding a shaker part way through would really help to carry the energy. I found myself wanting to sing along with harmonies in the chorus!

Great singing and playing, very uplifting.
