Exit Signs - Week #7
By Matthew Flook on February 15, 2014 8:20 pm
I'll keep this one brief considering it's my birthday weekend and I have celebratory libations to attend to. While I struggled through much of the week to strike a creative chord in the studio, this piece finally took shape on Friday afternoon and quickly became one of my favorite creations thus far. Settling on an all-too-simple 16th note D-to-B bassline - voiced by the Futucraft Kairatune synth - and a soaring synth lead from the V-Station, I knew this idea had epic potential.
After becoming hooked on the BreakTweaker demo, I had to license this killer new rhythm tool and incorporate it as a full-time member of my studio setup. It provides the skittering, stuttering percussion throughout much of the song, using its built-in synth engine to create custom static blips and the pitched bass growl on the downbeat to follow the main bassline. The big drums in the second half come from Maschine, with a healthy dose of compression and distortion.
Peace!
