Exit Signs - Week #5
By Matthew Flook on February 2, 2014 8:19 pm
Taking a slightly different turn this week I decided it was time to dust off my old friend, the Vocoder. Keeping the synth layers and reverb to a minimum, I did my best to let the excellent (and free!) TAL Vocoder shine, with a simple lyrical hook I recorded through my Studio Projects C1 mic. A touch of compression, delay, and reverb rounded out this channel to my liking.
Lest we forget the intro and core of the song, a pulsing synth arpeggio from the Phonec plug-in that - in retrospect - reminds me of a number of Boards Of Canada songs. This intro sound also gets layered with a minimal field recording captured in a place I spend the majority of my weekdays, sprinkled with the sounds of rustling paper and keyboards being typed upon.
The glitch-filled hi-hat rhythm gets a healthy dose of evolving modulation from the brand new (free, and very cool) GlitchMachines Fracture buffer effect plug-in, the Audio Damage Replicant beat-repeat-style plug-in, and some basic LP filter automation over the course of the track. The final part of the main drum sequence also receives some automation with a ping pong delay and my favorite comb filter, the OhmForce OhMyGod plug-in.
