Exit Signs - Week #33
By Matthew Flook on August 17, 2014 6:05 am
Now this is more like it; some spare time to really get into the zone… albeit right before we head out for a week long road trip. Packing can wait, because this track deserves exploration in the form of three distinct movements.
We begin with a syncopated synth pattern on the off-beat of the kick drum, a formant-based sound from the compelling Prologue virtual instrument. A sustained Retrologue bass line enters while a skittering drum pattern emerges from Maschine and the 'Traktor's 12' effect hosted (oddly) by Guitar Rig. Next up is a proper drum beat from BreakTweaker, a dubstep-inspired rhythm to compliment the soft melodies and reinforce my self-described (and admittedly-silly) Dreamstep genre.
We then get to a warbly lead line from Phonec, which bends and builds to the next octave before the song dissolves into a sparse yet hopeful bridge. Another layer of the Prologue synth enters the equation, this time sequenced by the Cubase 'Arpache SX' MIDI insert and echoing into space via built-in Ping Pong Delay.
Movement Three: A new drum pattern, harmony, and bass line, plus lead melody from my real-life guitar rig played on my Fernandes. The synths and guitar automate and fade away, but drums stay the course until the final moment.
