Exit Signs - Week #23
By Matthew Flook on June 8, 2014 11:28 pm
With new software comes fresh new sounds, and this week's are all about spectral and granular morphing thanks to a new addition: TimeFlux. This application from SoundMorph allows manipulation of sound in ways that I've only dreamed of, and here we use it to great effect on some wildly futuristic glitch percussion.
But I'm already getting ahead of myself… as the song begins with a smooth analogue-esque synth harmony courtesy of Retrologue, using some liberal filter cutoff automation and sidechain compression from the kick drum downbeat. The morphed percussion - which was made from a 1-bar loop of our main synth and drum patterns running through the TimeFlux spectral engine - kicks in and stutters along the way thanks to the Replicant effect. The first drum pattern enters, powered by Maschine 2.0's synth modules, before the main BreakTweaker beat drops at roughly the 1-minute mark.
Our main synth progression sweeps and swells into new areas before the mix gives way to only a simple bassline and further-glitched drum effects provided by Buffeater. We quickly hit the outro section, which introduces a new BreakTweaker pattern and a layered, choir-like pad synth provided by Alchemy. The melodies swell to a breaking point before cutting, leaving only the reverb tail fading into the abyss.
