Exit Signs - Week #22
By Matthew Flook on June 1, 2014 8:25 pm
This week was all about spring cleaning in my household, clearing out old unused gadgets from the basement and making way for a clutter- and care-free summer. It's amazing what difference some good weather and a yard sale can make on one's mood. This song, I believe, captures that refreshed feeling.
We begin with a slightly overdriven yet sweet V-Station melody and some bit-crushed synth drums from Maschine. Additional drums enter the stage from BreakTweaker, and a pad from Alchemy rounds out the mix. The lead melody kicks in, courtesy of a subtly-portamento'd synth patch from Phonec.
After a brief breakdown, a key change occurs and we're back to the familiar V-Station sound but now in B minor. This changes the mood a bit, and the same elements from the first half of the song now take on a new, slightly darker tone. The harmonies and melodies layer and crescendo while the drums double up and stutter rhythmically thanks to the fine Replicant effect. As quickly as it was built up, the layers are taken away and we end on a single sustained synth bass note, doing its best to hang onto this feeling.
