Wish I could have spent more time on this one, but I had a blast making it!

Here is the micro-story I wrote for this one (like I'm doing for all my submissions!)

STORY

“GET BACK!”

The words barely had time to register in Alex’s brain before an explosion threw him backwards, slamming him into a large steel pole behind him.

Luckily, he’d just Augmented his physical strength and resilience not too long before that. He was sure he’d be dead if he hadn’t by now.

These bastards are tough… Alex thought to himself as he wiped the blood from his mouth.

Ahead of him, he saw Dregs running towards him, a gravity zone shield put up behind him to block the incoming fire.

“You OK Al?” Dregs asked as he held out a hand towards Alex.

“I’m fine,” Alex said as he grabbed Dregs’ hand and pulled himself up. “How the hell are we gonna get past them?”

“I don’t know, but this shield isn’t gonna hold for much longer, and they’re prepping for another round,” said Dregs.

There’s no time… thought Alex.

He looked up at the incoming rounds of lethal bullets, held back by the nearly depleted gravity shield.
“I have an idea,” Alex said.

Dregs looked at him, his face curious before realising what it was that Alex meant. “You can’t!” Dregs said. “You’ll die!”

“We’ll both die if we stay here any longer! I have to do it!” Alex yelled back at him.
Dregs knew he was right.

Alex put his hand on Dregs’ shoulder. “Just make sure they remember me,” he said.

Alex flared up his power. He felt his bones get denser, his muscle fibres become more tense and his whole body surge with energy—an energy that felt like it could break him apart at any moment. And he rushed towards his enemy,
