Upon thinking about all the “stuff” I carry around in my purse and on how it has changed over the years – this song came into being. It was curious to me that when I was a girl it was such an important part of being a girl and it did truly evolve over time.
‹ Lyrics
Verse
I wonder how does it all start
To carry the love of a little girl’s heart
The treasures that we first hold so close
Gifts from the ones that love us the most
Can we tell who we are by the things that we keep
Does our purse reveal what makes each of us unique
Verse
My pink plastic purse at the sweet age of five
Included my hopscotch lagger inside
A sand dollar from a trip to the shore
Pink bubble gum and red matchbox car
Liddle Kiddle Rosebud doll with hair in a braid
Wooden tokens from the penny arcade
Verse
The canvas handbag I had as a teen
Fanciful keyrings with my single key
Paperback books, pencils and pens
Library card and pictures of friends
For a minute, a place for lighter and smokes
Pipe and baggy for those after school tokes
Verse
My smart leather purse when I became a mother
Umbrella secured to face any weather
Library card replaced by so many
Checkbook, calculator, an extra penny
Band-Aids and aspirin and even a spork
Swiss army knife to work any cork
Verse
Retired, that purse had a chance to slim down
Those Business cards all replaced by a phone
With family and friends and all the old haunts
Eclectic gift card from my favorite restaurant
Pictures taken from the latest vacation
Glasses for the sun, reading and every occasion
Verse
I wonder how does it wind up at the end
Purse always beside me like an old friend
I’m sure it helped me to navigate life
What would I have done without my Swiss army knife
It shouldered some remedies to help with my hurts
Treasures and memories wrapped in this old purse
