sideways cedars (#weeklyseasons spring 2022)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(#weeklyseasons) (spring 2022)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The world is sideways -
like, the sky’s in front of you,
and the ground behind.
`
The woods? Lateral -
you could walk up the treetops
and bathe in the blue,
`
sit there, cast a line,
fish for birds, fingers crossed that
the tree won’t buckle,
`
‘cause falling’s forever,
in circles, ‘round the world, ’til
you hit something tall.
`
Still, you like to fish,
‘cause you like to watch the birds -
they go up and down.
`
The world is sideways -
and you sit tight, on a treetop,
fishing. You’re alright.

Sounds like WeeklySeasons is kicking off today with Spring-themed submissions. (Check out Judgement Act’s pitch for the challenge here: https://weeklybeats.com/forums/post/92946/). The timing’s perfect. The hills are dotted with wildflowers, and I’ve been itching to write something colorful to reflect the transition. Hope it turned out okay!

Very peaceful. thank you

The imagery in your poem works perfectly with the music. I love fantastical descriptions like "You could walk up to the treetops" where the laws of physics are eschewed to create a magical place. There's a song out there called "Wayfarer" by a band called Kayo Dot that has really flowery poetic lyrics. Maybe you'll like the song, but the lyrics themselves are a cool read.

Got really into just reading the poetic blurb, but as for the music itself I really like the different instrument choices on this one. The crushed 8-bit trilling sounds really cool behind the synth pads, the fretless bass sounds amazing with the fret sliding, its actually mega impressive the attention to detail on that performance.

I can imagine this being the music for a bright, colorful village from Chrono Trigger. Wonderful instrumentation and melody!

wait, it's much more of a forest theme than village theme. important correction smile

This track makes me want to go out hiking so badly. If only I were home in Ireland. Yes, this turned out more than okay thank you very much. Beautiful piece.

Still cold here! Tomorrow we get freezing rain, fun!

What is that string instrument that makes these smooth slides? Is that a fretless guitar or a fretless bass? And then a sitar at 1:28? The background arpeggios and lush strings for some reason remind me of a christmas, festive yet quiet time. What a pretty track.

I fantasize about this sometimes. It's a beautiful song, too, really feels like it's waking up from a slumber.

Thanks so much - both for the kind words and the recommendation! That song was quite a journey. big_smile

Thanks! I’ve been meaning to get back out hiking too. February was a crazy month, though, so I had to make do with haikus. tongue

Yikes - hope warmer days aren’t too far off! Just send the rain our way if you don’t need it. It gets freakishly dry during the summers here, so we could definitely use it.

Hehe, that's certainly one way to get a sideways cedar.
Your gifs are always the doggone best. tongue I've got no bone to pick with them!

You got it! Fretless bass at first, then sitar at 1:28.
And thanks so much! big_smile

You too? Sweet!
And thank you. heart

Wow that fretless bass is incredible.  I need to learn how to do these awesome chord changes.  any advice on learning music theory?  Your music makes me so emotional because the notes pull me in so many different directions.

It is indeed a sneezy breezy tree,
but not a sleazy tree, as we can see. tongue

Seriously though, thanks! As for the question, I've been brainstorming for the last couple of weeks and I think I finally have a half-decent answer. I just tried DM'ing it to you as a WB email. This is the first time I've tried that, though, so let me know if it didn't come through.

This one's unbelievable, the bass + sitar + chip-arp combo is perfect. Move over legumes as my favorite track of the year! (No, wait, what are you doing? I said move over, not get down... Yes, there's a LOT of space for the #1, my #1, my rules. Cedars do you need a hand getting up there? Oh ha, you're already there! Well done!..)
