~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Said Odin to the watchman,
"Tell me all that you have seen,
for I pray your panacea
to the terrors my son dreams."
**
Said Heimdall, Odin's watchmen,
"Yes, these dreams are known to me,
for the subjects of his nightmares
are the futures I foresee.
**
I foresee a brutal winter;
I foresee a rising tide;
I foresee a wolf, a serpent,
and a traitor at their side;
**
I foresee a time of men of fire
and sunless, moonless skies;
I foresee a grief that none can speak,
though most can empathize."
**
Said Odin, "Ragnarok." And then –
"Why, Heimdall, do you grin?"
“Why, in Midgard, Ragnarok is come,
though here it yet begins –
**
and Ragnarok has, several times,
struck all nine worlds of ours,
but out of all Yggdrassil's fruits,
Midgard each time endures.
**
This shall be the panacea,
this shall help your child to heal –
for Ragnarok is cyclical,
though Midgard may yet break the wheel."
Here’s a throwback to WeeklyBeats 2018. I was never satisfied with how the 2018 iteration of this track turned out, and this week seemed like a good opportunity to give it another go. In 2018, I called it “valhalla” and drew inspiration from Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology. This year, as part of a self-imposed, Gaiman-inspired challenge to come up with tracks for all nine Norse cosmological worlds, I’m dedicating the track to Midgard – our world. Even in the middle of Ragnarok, it's a place worth fighting for.
(The original "valhalla" is here for context: https://weeklybeats.com/reilly+farrell/music/valhalla.)
Oh, and it rained this weekend. That, among other things, merits celebration. big_smile
Stay safe, stay healthy, and take care everybody! 2020's just the latest spin of the wheel. We can turn it around.
Love the guitar and vocals in this one. I sure hope you’re using a Valhalla reverb in there wink
Both versions of this song are really nice, but I definitely like a lot of the updates you did.  The bongos and guitar 16th notes really help bring the energy level up.  The arps going on the in the background are really cool touch too.  Very well written and arranged.
This one also works just fine after the storm. Incidentally, the frantic nature of this piece and the inclusion of the choir makes this feel much more like Valhalla than the original.
The choir sounding like a Valkyrie and the aetheral ending are my favorite parts of this track.
Did you start a new musical genre called Viking-Core?  I think you did.
That secret chip in the background is really tastefully done.
Haha, I should've! Guess I'll have to try again in 2022. wink
Much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to listen to both!
Thanks! Glad to hear it. I was definitely feeling more frantic at the beginning of the week when I wrote it.
Thank you!
Well that makes two genres I've allegedly come up with: Viking-Core and Cowstep (Hieme came up with the latter). Looks like I'll have to find a way to merge the two at some point!
(And personally, I like chocolate chip, but secret chip is my other favorite kind of cookie.) tongue
Thanks for listening!
