Last Memory

Still having fun synthesizing 80s sounds! This track feels like peaceful nostalgia to me, maybe even wistful. But it's also stuck in a loop - like being "stuck" in a happy, but distant memory. Thinking of that Black Mirror episode where old peoples minds are uploaded so they can spend a digital afterlife in an endless loop of their best days - or something along those lines. Maybe also the way dementia is portrayed in Human Resources, where the mind of an old lady finds peace in wandering back to an old summer romance from a lifetime ago.
I made a small loop using synthesized sounds, resampled it and slowed it down (experimented and found a sweetspot in terms of sound at a ratio of 4:5, so a perfect fourth) for a little Vaporwave flavor. Really love what this does to the snare! Also using an LFO for some pitch drift (which is also causing some slight tempo fluctuation, making the track almost eerily unstable at times). With that backdrop providing a solid base on just one track (and sending all of it into plenty of Reverb and Chorus, too), I had space to write a melody on top, layering sounds and even spreading out some voices over multiple tracks for lush polyphony. Wanted to try my hand at making some decent leads with FM Synth, which I had been using primarily for basses and drums. Great for discovering new techniques!
If summer's coming for your home right now as well, take a stroll and soak in some sunlight.
