In news that will neither shock or surprise anyone, I am planning on ending Weekly Beats with a droning, spooky tune.  For this week I wanted to step a little outside my comfort zone.  A couple of times this year I've tried to make more melodic music, also a couple of times I've tried to write rhythmic/drum patterns with static noise - this second last submission brings that together.

It's a bit of a mess, but that's ok.  There are some good ideas hidden in the noise and it is something I can revisit in the new year after a bit of music theory study, maybe then the note progression won't sound as jarring.

For those who celebrate I hope your christmas is exactly the one you are hoping for and that you can be as close or as far away from the people as makes you happy.

Made in Ableton

That opening static certainly grabs your attention! This almost feels like a collab between John Carpenter and Merzbow - clean synth lines with jarring, aggressive noise. I like how they at times blend, and at others first for dominance. An uneasy tension.

This makes me want to try radio static as a noise source - cEvin kEy always had a radio as a part of his setup for SP. I have my mom’s old radio in the basement, might need to hook that into the studio for week 52…

Nice one, great to get out the comfort zone creatively. Cool you got some ideas in here to revisit. Weekly beats is great for that I think.

Wish you well for you holiday period too, I like how you put it ha!

I also used some pretty abrasive glitchy sounds in my work this week, but I definitely haven't gone so decidedly into that aesthetic. I like this, the arp does ground the noises and creates interesting context. The Skinny Puppy comparison above is spot on.

Clicky static noise distortion deliciousness, my fave flavour. I mean this with love: this isnt painful and thats a challenge with this kind of sound.

This could be an amazing textural break on a longer drone ambient piece. Also a SOMA Ether might become your very inexpensive best noise field recording friend if you get into that...

Oh hail yais!  First off, that intro sentence with the intro actually had me nervous for a sec "wait he's ending weeklybeats!? Oh right cuz end of year derp."  Love the Knight Rideresque feel with the intro but then it takes on those suhweety glitchy sounds that makes me wish my dot matrix printer sounded like that back in the day smile The rhythm of the pulsing glitches at :57 is hypnotic and I coulda listened to that for even longer.  Replayed 4 times cuz ear candy!  Uno mas!

Man, the sound design is just tasty in this track... so many of those percussive "staticy" sounds have such interesting and complex character.  I love the sharpness of the high-end... has a kind of "super high res" feel to it, that makes it sound like the sounds are happening in the room, not in the speakers so to speak.  Awesome piece.
