The Blackest Eyes, The Devil's Eyes

By lament.config on October 6, 2024 12:00 pm

The plan was to make a drone track which implied a few notes from John Carpenter's Halloween.  Didn't stick the landing but learned a few things along the way.

Week 40, only 12 more weeks to go

Made in Ableton

Where the hell did the year go?!

This is effective AF. Love that repeating high texture you have in there - gives an unnerving feel, and allows that drone underneath to give it weight. I particularly liked how you brought in those piano tones at the end - I liked the implied Halloween there smile

I can't exactly place it but it sounded like lil wooden wheels turning and then it kinda morphed into these scary bird shrills when the bass is breathing in and out.  Scary AF vibes with the sorta tool-grating-on-the-floor sound.  Agree the implied Halloween theme was just the right amount of "Oh? Is someone there?" Well done!

Even though the direct John Carpenter Halloween homage isn't immediately obvious, the tension and unease from the original are DEFINITELY present in your tune as well. This is super moody and dark, very cool!!! Nice job!!!

I wasn't sure if anyone was going to get the Halloween nod at the end but I guess I am around my people smile

I know right?  And thank you, this one was fun to do.  The plan was that the higher pitched drones would play out the Halloween theme, just very slowly.  Didn't quite work out haha

Thank you.  That grating sound was a sample I found of a CB radio having the talk button (I don't know radios) a few times, I ran it through a static effect and some dirty record surface noise.

Oh thank you, that's wonderful to hear. To capture even the littleness bit of the kind of tension Carpenter can create is always a goal for me when I try to do spooky.

I wouldn't say you didn't "stick the landing". It's just that when you're trying to replicate somebody else's tracks, it still comes out as yours. And that's perfectly okay, as the result here is very good!
