It's Rather Unpleasant (edit)

By lament.config on June 2, 2024 12:02 pm

No seriously, that isn't meant to be a funny title, this weeks track really is unpleasant to listen to.

I tend to get depressed in the weeks leading up to my birthday and this year has been worse than most, it's possible this is a reflection of that.  Believe it or not I had started writing a fun(ish) glitch tune to try working some beats over - however the more I worked on it the worse it became.  Rather than accept it was ruined and start something new I kept pushing it until Saturday night, at which point I knew it was fucked.  So I wrote this over that night and Sunday, removed some of the more disturbing bits and here we are.  Apologies up front.

Made in Ableton

Nah, don't apologize.

What's the point of making these things if we can't use them as an outlet or a reflection of what's going on with our lives?

Is it rough? Sure. But it's honest and honest is always good in it's own way.

I’m not sure if it’s says something about me that your first sentence made me pretty excited to give it a listen…

Track did not disappoint, I liked this. Great ambience and mood. I’m curious to hear what it was like before you edited it!

That’s what’s so weird about music and art…we approach it with our desires and intentions, but also layer it with our preconceptions. But once we release it into the world, it’s free of those preconceptions…and other people can perceive it in completely new ways.

Like Beefpounder said, no apology necessary. This was vital and raw. Good art.

Def don't need to apologize for this dark soundscape one bit.  The recurring rusty clanks in the distance gave me some industrial feels.  Like some of the moodiness from NIN's Reptile.  Something is brooding and lurking in this and waiting to make it's move.  I feel ya on the birthdays too.  Pretty much same thing happens to me where I don't want to get excited, then i do but then disappointment and rinse and repeat smile  Just channel all that into next week's track and bam! smile  \m/

Thanks guys, I wasn't expecting anyone to really listen to what I did when I started WB yet alone offer words of encouragement and support.  It means a lot, thank you.

You make a good point, which I should already know given my taste in music.  thanks man.

No I completely get that.  I don't think anyone listens to Death Industrial or Black Metal than to be excited by the kind of sonic discomfort they produce.  Regarding the edits, I feel a little awkward saying this but it was mostly the sound of human suffering.  I really leaned into a sort of home invasion kind of feel but 1 - didn't feel comfortable uploading that to WB and 2 - really didn't like that the only useful samples were of women and that just made the track (and me) feel gross.

I was trying to make the rusty clank sound sharper, more dangerous, but I could mangle the sample in the right direction.  and if I could invoke even the slightest mood of Reptile then damn, that's a week worth spending on this.  This weeks track I'm swinging hard and trying for a John Carpenter kind of feel.  I got a Snakes of Russia sample pack and am currently trying to put together a drum rack (my first attemt) with his beats.

Oh yeah, COMPLETELY understand. I like listening to Throbbing Gristle so I'm no stranger to disturbing audio, but posting something like that in a public forum for every to review is not the best idea. Your discretion is understood and appreciated smile

I quite like the eerie vibe of this one.  Subtle.  Very cool.
