Spore forest (Tyson mix)

By laguna on February 16, 2014 11:16 pm

This week I go back to a certain mellow atmospheric mood. Guess it's great music to walk through a giant hallucinogen mushroom forest, like in Hayao Miyakazi's Nausicaa smile

88 beats per minute. Ableton Live 9, Meeblip, Zoom H4N and some abuse of bit crushing and granularity effects.

tell me, on what planet did you find these grooves?

Hey man, thanks! The beat is actually a three part layer:

One is a low pass filtered conga groove, the bright cabasa (I recorded it in my bathroom... bright reverb walls!), a 808-esque drum machine to emphasize the bassdrum and snare, quantised hi hats and finally, the sparkiling bright jazzy ride metal groove.

did you just say bathroom? I too occasionally record stuff on the toilet big_smile highfive!

What a beat! Thanks for explaining the layers!

Sweet groove .. I record acoustic guitar in my reverby bathroom all the time, no room for a kit though unfortunately neutral

You're welcome, Gify. I think it would be very positive more production talk in here. We're all producers and musicians at the end of the day smile

the drum entry is so perfect! love it! i want to walk through this aforementioned forest....

what's the bassline? it's a really great sound.

Thank you. The forest is a Operaton (Ableton's own FM synth) instance, with some soft reverb. Some kind of Yamaha FM7's "Solid bass" patch with low cutoff and some resonance.

I messed a lot with the bassline and finally discarded all my "clever" modifications and went back to what you hear here. I thought it was a little bit poor melodically, but since my harmonic skills are pretty limited, I tried to keep it simple. Anyway, I amost always exagerate the bottom end in the pads, so some low freq presence is guaranteed.

Any of you have problems balancing the bassline with the main melody?

Lovely atmosphere!

kick ass beat!  and I like the chimey sounds, reminds me a bit of Plaid's album "Double Figure".  Well done! smile

Plaid? Never thought about it. I'll check that album smile

z0mg it's one of my favorite albums ever smile  From the opening track "Eyen" to my all time fav of theirs "Sincetta".  IMHO it's an underrated album but so good *jumps off plaid soapbox*  but yes your cool track reminded me a bit of some of their sounds smile

This is really good. I often struggle with "meddling" with a sound or stem too much and will force myself to go back to the original idea. It works out better sometimes. Bass line is actually my fave element in this track. Bravo. Im with more production banter as well...

Hey Dastein, thank you. I dealt a lot against "falling in love with an idea", only to find after a couple of days that a) that idea sucked or b) it doesn't fit the context of the song... Now I found that if what I've created it's cool enough, I render it to audio so I could make loops out of it or simple press "delete".

Too many songs wasted in the hard drive for years because I was looking for that "perfect" patch that would give the whole track a magic touch smile

Amazing track. Everything about it just feels right. Great work!

Hey, thanks! Really appreciated. What a good feedback I'm receiving... and I wasn't very sure of this track. I thought it was somewhat incomplete smile

Guess sometimes we need to stop worring and just release stuff

Excellent. Well balanced sounds within the beat/s. Nice roomy mix...well done!

Absolute favourite heart
