Sixteen slices of Grey (Automata mix)

By laguna on June 22, 2014 11:56 pm

This week all my respect goes to Colorful Grey who kindly allowed me to sample one of his fantastic lute songs.

I guess my work comes quite lame against his melodic and performing talent. Basically I chopped the initial 2 bars and add some chippy synths and riddims. Nothing too fancy or skilled, but I guess I had to submit it.

Ableton Live, Arturia microBrute for the bass and some awesome lute samples... Thanks again, Colorful Grey.

Excellent mix! You captured (and expanded) the rhythm perfectly. Nothing to be shy about here!

Yeah, I second what Jim said. I really love this interpretation, and treatment, of the original material. Lovely stuff.

Agree, this is very nice!

Dude.
Super awesome. I think somehow the lute samples sound better here than in the original song? Did you do some fancy EQ'ing? Plus you're right, just that first phrase is quite powerful in itself. It's weird how shifting the focus brings out new nuances of the music.
Thank you for taking the time to play with these samples. I'm actually quite humbled.

Also, can I post a link to this on my facebook/soundcloud? With credit to you of course?

this is powerful -- understated and holds the tension at just the right level.  great stuff!

Nice digital lute manipulation

This is awesome.  I honestly can't decide if I like Colorful Grey's peaceful and pure lute or your modifications more.  Nice work. smile

And I'm quite honoured. Your material is quite expressive and I was a little bit afraid that chopping and quantizing could kill most of the original vibe. With more time, I'd love to apply some swing and a more human feel.

Of course! Be my guest smile (Actually I am yours, using your wonderful material both as inspiration and source)

Nice track! I like the mix of lute and electronic music, unexpected and well done.

Really tight track! Nice lute chops and like jjensen23 said, it holds the tension just right. smile
That boomy bass synth stab sounds like a thunderstorm on the horizon...

Excellent work! Great production and really cool use of Colorful Grey's original material. Thumbs up!

Thank you guys! Really, 90% of the flavour is in the lute from Colorful Grey. With samples like those, everything sounds nice smile

I wanted some of your tracks' fatness, so I had to use some analog deep saw waves wink

That is the most ganster lute I've ever heard. This track is crunchy getting crunchier!

pretty slick.

As I keep playing this, I'm impressed on how well you brought out the essential Middle-Eastern flavor of the main riff.
