I brought back my Yamaha RM1x to service. It's old and limited and the sounds are nothing special... and maybe that's why I enjoy working with it. This week everything is the RM1x and Ableton for sequencing. I used some tricks like the Ableton vocoder, but most of the sounds came pretty straight from the machine.

Back in the late 90s, I learnt the craft of sampling using cheap equipment, dreaming of some super lush synths I couldn't afford. Though, many years later, when I finally got some decent gear, I often didn't knew what to do with it. The RM1x is a typical groovebox/ROMpler with boring and generic sounds, so you need to add layers and fx to give them some body, but... What should I do with an almighty Serum patch with endless modulation possibilities? Or a fantastic Absynth wavetable-based preset that sounds on its own like a whole intro to a track?.

Don't get me wrong, those tools are fantastic, but... Do you get "lost" with them sometimes?.

Anyway, just a thought. This one was made on Sunday after a long and busy work shift. It's a little bit short, and I was starting to get a vibe, but I run out of time as always smile

I need to catch up with the comments and the songs. I'm off-duty, finally, and happy to be at home. I hope you all are safe in a cozy place.

A peaceful place.

Love to you all, wherever you are.

Oh, such a quick comment. Thanks a lot!

I've just finished the track notes. It's basically a 909-ish kick drum mixed with a "breakbeat on vinyl" short sample, all coming from my old Yamaha RM1x groovebox. The reverb helps hide the static and dry 90's ROMpler sound smile

wow the breakbeat sounds huge! amazing stuff

Whoah! It's great to see you again, Matteo! Glad you came back for another year!!!

Well, I'm pretty proud of the break, because it came from some ugly nineties "Breakbeat" (real name) drumkit preset. I pitched it down and added some reverb, all in the machine. Anyway, the mix masks a lot of the "canned" sound (it has some "jungle", "trance" and "d'n'b" kits also, sounding pretty cliché) and there's the 909-ish kick underneath adding more punch.

Laid back funkiness here oh yais!

Hypnotic percussive track! Love these tones.

woooooo this is hot!  that pitch down of the drums is so sick, as well as the "kit change up"

great stuff!  i'm going to steal these ideas for my beat competition smile
