Ghost of a dead producer

By laguna on September 14, 2020 12:01 am

This one's been an absolute nightmare. Thanks to Wisefire for the late upload link, because a couple of hours close to the deadline, everything went south on this project.

WARNING: LONG TECHNICAL RANT AHEAD. FEEL FREE TO SKIP!!!

I tried to use the ReWire engine to extract audio from an old Modplug Tracker module so everything could be more "fluent and spontaneous", though something went wrong and I had to discard everything and restart. Yes, Modplug, not OpenMPT. This file was dated july 2001, though I think that's just the backup date. This time I turned every Impulse Tracker instrument into a Renoise one and then hosting it inside the Redux plugin. Once I did that, everything went smoothly, though I lost hours redoing stuff.

My production skills were laughable at best at 2000 so everything was messy, overloaded and distorted. Lucky me, I obsessively label every sample, so I went back to my archived CDs and resample a couple of things, and rechopped the breaks and a lead sample. It took me ages to know how to EQ and mix this one, until I almost abandoned the old project and started from scratch with "refurbished", clean instruments.

I'm not saying this is even good in any way. The idea is quite simple and the beat is not much interesting, but it is good to be able to "close" this one, after so many years in the "unfinished" section.

I'll continue my COVID quarantine for some days, fortunately with almost no symptoms. Thanks a lot to everyone who sent good wishes. The community is a great place to be these days smile

Be safe and be happy, WB family!!!

Glad you are doing better! The process sounded a bit roundabout, but it works!

Thank you, Ipaghost!!! Oh, "roundabout" it's a huge understatement. All because I couldn't find two of the most important samples (tagged as "anonymous 60s artist" by me, 20 years ago) and I had to clean them all I could.

Thanks for the background informations. I do understand your iron will to finalize this old song and I appreciate the efforts you had. The result is better as you sell it. Enjoy your quarantine, the good thing is. you are probably immune now and need no vaccination injection.

There are some very very cool samples in this track. It has a cool retro vibe, love it.

Wow it is so cool you still have access to all the material for tracks back in 2000. I was always so messy that I have lost everything from that period until... this year really. Export zipped loop package > save to google drive has been my process for 2020 but all the rest is just lost (except the final mp3s, it's better than nothing i guess).

Good luck on the recovery!

Sending you well wishes on your COVID recovery journey! Slick beat; I’m glad you were able to finish this one.

Yo! This beat is lit!! In my opinion - even more so because of the technical difficulties you had to overcome! Sounds like an exciting way of revisiting your former self! I bet the whole thing would have been like a trip down memory lane!

Good to hear you are making a recovery!

Stay Well!!

Much Love
