Astronaut Lullaby

Alrighty. Week 2, here we go! I didn't mention in my last post. This year, I'm constraining myself to Logic, which is a DAW I've barely used at all since I'm most familiar with Pro Tools and Ableton. Especially since I've decided not to renew my Pro Tools subscription, and I've tried for many years to get to into Reaper.

As far as the creative side of it, for this year I'm going to try and focus on things like better melody writing, harmony and more traditional forms of arrangement. Kinds of stuff I did, oddly enough before my music degree, but completely pushed aside when I went down the avant garde rabbithole. In previous years, I've kind of just stuck with production and sound art/noise focused stuff which, while fun, also kind of made the ideas feel a bit too throwaway and I never felt compelled to go back and listen to much of it. So it's quite a change if anyone here is familiar with past stuff.

This particular number is a mix of in-the-box and some live instruments, namely drums, bass, guitar and vocals. The vocals were the seed idea and I built from there. They're varispeeded down, which was something I initially had trouble with in Logic until I eventually found the SpeedFX mode of Flex Time. That's very much a relief because I really like varispeeding things. This one was recorded entirely off grid. I thought about doing a tempo map to open some sequencing options/make my life easier, perhaps, but I was in so far, so I just lived without a click on this one.

This needs a deck chair on the moon overlooking the earth smile.

A beautiful recording. I also like the keys you used and the different reverbs you have taken.  It is funny that I did a lullabysong as well this week. My timestretch was done by paulstretch effect. Good luck with logic, I think you have a lot to discover.

When you are deep into work and a song comes on and you look to see what it is, that was this one very nice.

great track! it was nice reading your description. can't wait to hear more

So chill, I though it was wonderful! Thanks for sharing

That was really nice. I had to listen back after reading the description to pay more attention to the vocals! Also appreciate she sharing of your background and process.

Really beautiful song, indeed. I think Aisjam captured it the best:

I was familiar with your avant-garde stuff and it's a pleasant surprise to hear this more "traditional" approach comming from you. Extra kudos for sticking to one DAW... and yes, subscription models really suck. That's one of the reasons that kept me from trying Bitwig Studio.

On a geekier note, I've always been intrigued by the power of Logic. A friend found a complete USB key for Logic 7 in a discarded Mac, and gave that to me, so I'm planning to have a go at that one once I've got a proper "end of PowerPC" era machine properly set up.

Really enjoying this one. Sounds so loose and relaxed it's hard for my to picture it back in a grid arrangement. Awesome work !!!

Just need to work out how to integrate gin & tonic dispensing into my space helmet, then I'm all good.

Thanks for listening!

Paulstretch is great. It's been a while since I've used it. A very different vibe to the good old fashioned varispeed. I remember I quite liked how you used it in your track. I should revisit Paulstretch.

I'm glad you got something out of the lil' write up. I'll try to include some more that in future posts if I can. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for stopping by!

A very chill song to relax while facing the hostilities of space.
