He’s Sleeping Alone

By kelley on January 4, 2026 6:28 am

Titled in honor of my son letting me put him down long enough to work on this for an hour or two. It ended up going harder than I expected but that was its trajectory.

A long conversation recording was processed, chopped in the OP-1 drum sampler, then played live using the Finger sequencer. Audio and MIDI were captured in Logic. MIDI notes were gated via Drambo to reduce them and used to trigger bass and kick tracks along with vocal hits.

Wait hang on, so there’s vocal chops coinciding with all the kick drums? (Brutal!)

Yep! Kicks are a strict subset of vocal chop hits. smile

This does go pretty hard! 🤘

What an interesting way to modulate drums

I'm a sucker for danceable rhythms that sound all stompy like this. Thank you!

Thank you! I thought of the kick as modulating the vocals. I like this interpretation too. smile
