Wanted - Dead or Alive - Bounty hunting to the sound of Funk

By Kedbreak136 on January 30, 2022 9:06 am

I had a few ideas for this week, including a mike tyson ring entry track, a soundgarden inspired rock track, a cyberfunk track (just because the word makes me laugh) but as I was watching youtube, I ended up a video that dealt with westerns and I realized that's what I needed. A western track, but in a funk way. I wanted like a funky western movie starring Morgan Freeman in the 70s, with a 70s kind of warm sound. And of course a lot of absurdity, else what would be the point?

The cowboy arrives to the town and dances his way to the saloon, looking for his bounty. Dead or alive. Instead of space cheese, this is western cheese this week!

I was torn with the final sound of the track. I have different mixes with more clarity and crispiness, but I kinda like this version that is warmer, even though it's dirty. It kinda takes me back to 70s sound I have in my head. Also, it was a good exercise trying to use brass more. And thanks to vo.codes for the voice generation.

This was also a week when I felt I was visited by sounds from the Weekly Beats past. I had kinda used that concept of a restaurant brawl back in 2020, and this funk riff is one that keeps popping into my head, and I suspect I have used it quite a lot. As long as I'm lifting from my own stuff, I guess it's alright.

Maybe as a joke you could have complete silence as your Tyson ring entrance track. He did that for a while to intimidate his opposition.

Really dig the bass line. Gives the whole track a nice groove to play on. I realized with this track that one of the things I like about your music is there's always a surprise in there somewhere. Something unexpected that makes you go "Oh" or "huh?" or just makes you laugh or smile.

Western funk is a perfect description of this.  Love the little sonic details like the horse whinny.  Also that's an awesome gif.

if this gets used in a syfy series, please lmk, I'd definitely watch

I second this. This track's gotta get used somewhere

Wow! This is super immersive and so big!!

Great track and the production is dirty but very cool.  Nice stereo spread in the mix.  Dig that crunchy funk beat and great use of samples again.

I really like how you incorporate sound fx to you tracks. It is a fun one again. The little honky tong low fi piano break is super cool.

Ayyyyy boogie time.  Bass is epic!  Super story inspiring.  Great use of stereo.

This slaps. I'm glad you mentioned 2020 because this is the style I remember from you in 2020. Your tracks this year have had a different feel but this story style of track is a nice callback to 2020. From listening to others, I've found that making mixes that date themselves to a time period can be pretty enjoyable. I think this one wouldn't fee as good if it had the clarity that we're used to hearing in tracks now. There's a charm to it.

This is the funkiest western I've ever heard! Love the samples in the second half... way to bring it home with gun shots and horse winnies. My fav parts are those little piano licks that stand out in between the heavier parts (the first one comes in at 1:10) It's not the main feature but such a great attention to detail that comes back up a few times but not in your face.

we need to get this track too hollywood to inspire some producers

Funky westerns are where its at. Those stodgy old westerns are over. This does slap, and would fit a story well. Mix is great, nice work with horns. I thought of the new cowboy bebop series, not a lot of horse sounds in there, but plenty of funky horn blasts to go with fight scenes, and the name cowboy of course.

This is awesome man, love how you found the perfect gif to go with it too.  Love all the different genres mashed up here, so cool.  Some seriously funky bass too.

WOW, this hits hard. Everything is professional executed. How can you top this anymore?

Super funky bass!  Awesome breakbeats with the brass flares too.  Hell yea!

So many fun sounds and instruments on this! Always impressing you make exciting film scenes on your music smile

Greatly funky and amusing track, so much going on an such a well defined sonic environment! Well done!

This track is so fun, so many little things to listen for, sounds perfectly fit the description of the story, great use of samples at the end with the old piano, vocals, and gunshots.  I hope you will make the Mike Tyson entry music, that sounds dope.

So balanced, I love how neat and tidy this mix is. Always happy to jam to some breakbeats too of course.

That's one funky cowboy, but I feel you could add some extra dirt to the bass

all the sound fx at the beginning put my dog on HIGH ALERT and he kept looking for this whistling bird and person walking in the gravel!  lol

didn't know how you could do western-funk, but here we are!  always learn of a new genre everytime you make a track, lol  the drum fills & bass tone are really good.

did you ever hear about The Avalanches wanted MORE horse samples on Frontier Psychiatrist?  lol

Thank you, that is one of the best thing someone could tell me. I try to keep it fresh, interesting and different! smile

Thank you! It's suprising western funk is not more of a thing. There was this movie also in the 80s, Ladyhawke I think? A fantasy story of knights and magic, with Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer but especially a Disco soundtrack! We need more mixes.

Thank you! Sometimes the track wants to get dirty and then the only way is to let the track do what it wants to do.

Right? It's like an old car with some rust and some weirdly cracked seats. They have soul! There is a Japanese word "wabisabi", which means that the beauty comes from imperfection. I love that concept.

Thank you! Great ear for these piano bits. I felt it was lacking a little something, like just a side splash of salt that does not take too much but kinda helps the whole thing.

A David Lynch western funk movie!

I think I was definitely inspired by cowboy bebop for the horn stabs. I also referenced JetSet Radio for the scratches. I like the originality of video games and anime music.

I am definitely still thinking of the Mike Tyson entry music, but I really want to make it right. smile

Haha my only goal is to get our pets to react and enjoy music! Mission accomplished!

I did not know of the Avalanches!!! How have I been living without knowing them! I need to investigate!

Hell yea, let that thing suspend every step it's taking through town

Really cool groove and great storytelling! Could be even better with some names to the characters wink

Digging the bass line and beats, and the drop with the screaming lady who was eaten by the tiger two tracks ago big_smile

One criticism that I feel like I'm missing some funk in the brass and synths, while the rest of the sounds are pretty humanized and groovy. Maybe you just wanted it to be more straight in which case it's cool big_smile Have you put some thought into these slight lacks of funkiness?

Anyway dope track and thanks for the great journey! I will def return to this track to hear some more western space funk!

I feel like I'm always drawing a comparison between your music and video games, but this one totally sounds like it could be in some kind of old western "boomer" shooter. You know, those old school FPS games where you never needed to reload and every song had those funky midi basslines (Rise of the Triad, Blood, Hexen). Basically, keep writing bad ass tunes and I  hope you compose music for a video game some day so I can jam out when playing it haha.

Whoa those breaks -- rooting for the villains in this western, but judging from the tune the getaway was successful. smile
