The Last Ride

I meant to record a skate punk track BUT I ended up watching the Hateful Eight the other night. One thing led to another, I listened to the soundtrack and then went back to Ennio Morricone and all I could think of doing was a western track. So... I did a western-y track. Horses! Gallops! Neeeigh! gunshots! Whipcracks! Crows! Stereotypes!

This is done as usual in FL studio, with samples from Slice and freesounds.org. My biggest disappointment is not finding a good "Yah" sample for cowboys pushing their horses. The mix is also pretty busy and not so clear. I am not too sure how to solve this, it may benefit from reducing the number of tracks and more time spent on EQ, maybe some compression here and there. The guitar is also a bit messy, this was a one take track on an acoustic, using an iphone for recording (it sounds better than with my microphone, that hurts my feeling). I doubled the bass with "Full brass - staccato" from Flex. It's ok and better than using a synthwave bass for this track but it kinda takes me back to the pirate tracks and then I ended up imagining pirates on horses. This is all very confusing.

I like the pianos from FLEX. This is the "Westworld" one, very appropriately named.

I'll swear I'll get to the skate punk track one of these days.

There's a certain melodic element to this song that immediately made me think of you. I feel like even with the change from pirates to cowboys, there's still a good helping of Kedbreak in here. I LOVE the old piano in there, and that you give it a little space to shine at 01:24!

Hateful 8 is a super good movie. I could see this being one of the level themes for a game like Nuclear Throne, which is kind of a western mutant apocalyptic type of game anyways. So it pretty much fits in, especially with all the gunshots.

I am pretty sure a big Ollie over this track would be epic... Those gun shots are great! Very fun track.

The chaos is quite nice, actually. Fits really well with the theme. Maybe it could use some work around the end when stuff stops playing to the beat.

The sound effects are all nice details with all the horses and guns and whatnot.  It sounded like there was a good "Yee-haw" in there that works just as well as a "Yah."  There was one section where I could kind of hear the pirates, but overall I really did get the western vibe.  The piano definitely gave me the feel of an old time saloon.

I don't know if I've heard a gunshot in a non rap/hip-hop song... Wow. Yeah. I can't say. You've done something here. This feels like a story, not a music track. The losses were many. Adios caballeros.

So fun, like these themed tracks you have been doing, surprising couldn’t find a good “yah” seems like should be a common sound, can picture some dusty old guy playing the piano while everyone shoots each other down.

this is awesome.  have you ever heard the soundtrack for the video game Sunset Riders?  It is really good.  Did you like the Hateful Eight?  I haven't seen it yet.

The honky tonk break down was awesome.  I'll have to record myself saying YAH for you to punch in before you put this on your album wink

Great job!  The trumpet sounds terrific.

It almost sounds like you have a non-time adjusted sample by accident starting at 2:09?

...OR DID THAT HORSIE JUST GET AWAY FROM YA, LITTLE DOGGIE???

In spite of trying to be all over the place, there is something templated about my approach, between a very "simple bass progression as backbone of the track" and "put as many samples as I can fit". I think I'll want to try to get out of that. And I'll play more with the piano! I can't play piano so programming one is not necessarily easy to make it sound natural but definitely an interesting learning experience.

I'll need to check that game! I like Tarantino's movies, usually for the dialogues but also very much for the music. Hateful Eight is definitely up there.

There is no bad music to do Ollies and Kickflips!

You mean the transition is a bit abrupt towards the end? Something more progressive may be more appropriate?

Thank you FLEX for all the sounds! The brass section is to blame for the pirate vibe!

"One" by Metallica comes to mind but it's really just the intro and I don't know of other tracks like that. Thank you, I appreciate the comment about it feeling like a story. smile

Right, I thought that would not be too hard to find a good "yah" with clean licensing but... no. Which may speak more to my ineptitude at google search rather than an actual lack of such samples. The dusty old guy playing the piano in the saloon while a fight goes on gives me ideas for a new track! Now I need broken glasses samples.

I'll welcome the YAH! Non time adjusted sample? Possible indeed, it's such a chaotic track. It looks awful in FL Studio. Did you mean the guitar riff that is kinda off? If yes, absolutely possible because it was not the best in time at the recording itself and then i pasted it there without taking too much time to align. Chaos, confusion, YEEHAW!

This is a superb and lovely western composition. I am surprised how good your guitar recording on the iphone came out. All the elements you have been using may be stereptypes, but work pretty well. I love that trumpet, I don`t know why. Great job.

No, I mean that at around 2:10 the drum is out of sync to the other instruments.

yep that one

Good times at this party out in the old west here, Yee haw!! Fun when a movie can send off onto a new track journey. You find lots of good samples to help tell the story!

Oh good catch, you're absolutely right. Looking at the project in FL studio, I notice that the drum pattern is incorrectly placed from that point on, just in the right way to screw up the whole rhythm. Fixed that for my soundcloud at least. Thank you!

Splice is a goldmine for samples!

Excellent use of the sfx.  I especially enjoyed those ominous caws.  The honky tonk piano was the icing on the cake for me.  It's cool how the galloping provides it's own rhythm to the drums.  Yawww!

The opening beat is almost like Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush but then crazy western stuff enters.  Huge mashup of sounds.

Great work. I did like the strings and horns

Awesome spaghetti western vibe.  The sound effects are over the top making this like a sonic play or story.  I like the saloon style piano coming in at the middle. Move along little doggies!
