The Exotic Pet Market of Proxima II

By Kedbreak136 on January 23, 2022 8:07 am

Walking through the dark blue alleys of the exotic pets market on the moon of Proxima II, lit with pink and purple neons that reflect in the rain pools. All the stereotypes of cyberpunk, space adventures and all the cheese you can imagine, straight from the Great Cheese Mines on the Moon.

This track sounds like the brother or sister of last week's track, but it did not start that way. I have really taken a liking to the guitar like synth and intended to make a balrog/vega (the character in SF2, with a claw) themed track. But, along the way, some synths and arps made it into the track and veered it in a wholly different direction. And here we are again travelling the road of cheesy space adventures again! I got to use some good old Poizone, plenty of samples, lots of synths, 30+ channels, there's even two layers of guitars hiding in there. It was a fun experiment.

It often feels like you're being apologetic when you talk about space adventure music, but it's so unabashedly fun. In your heart is a space pirate, I am certain of it.

Also love when it gets heavy around the 2:45 mark. It feels really good.

I liked the description you provided.  I was picturing the alleys in my mind as I listened.  Great energy to this and some really nice changeups.

The only thing I didn't like about this was how much it made want me to be on an actual cheesy space adventure.

Damn, this is intense, I love it. Like Vega's space adventure. Also a missed opportunity to have it take place on Vega II.

Also, if it's on a moon, its designation would be Proxima IIa.

Production is cranking and lots of great ideas.  Really enjoyed that guitar break before it kicks off!

Rad!! Really like the darker heavier section in the second half!

Awesome man, love the mood and the back story, want the cheese.  Great variety of instrumentation on this one, definitely get a little bit of everything.  I love the high pitched thing that shows up around 3:20.  Would be interested in hearing how you made that.

Très cool! Super compo avec les break de guit. La partie du milieu est vraiment bonne je trouve. Les samples de voix sont super beaux aussi. Le mix pourrait être un peu plus clean quand tout les sons sont là ont perd un peu de définition.

i'm on board for us writing SF character inspired tracks this year!

I have a Claw/Vega miniature on my desk as we type!

All the "animal noises" are awesome

The classical guitar was so evocative, I could smell the Cheese Mine Farmer's Market

awesome ending with the vocals and the movie theater kaboom

Quite the journey... Plein de trucs intéressant, l'ambiance est réussie. Well played.

Nice track! I'm getting some OG Super Meat Boy soundtrack vibes (that's a compliment. I loved that soundtrack lol).

EPIC Cyberpunk anthem! Love the subtle integration of guitar.  Makes me think of an epic standoff.  Some very nice dark turns in the second half.  Gets so heavy in parts. Love it!

oh hey, someone already called out the OG super meat boy vibes

seconding that

Love it. At 1:45, that little spanish guitar ... I feel like I found my new pet in the market and we're in love.
Bam, back on the trip! Cool how you were taken in another direction, a good one. Always look forward to your stories about the tracks.

Love this style, cheesy space adventures all the way, such a great blend of sounds, great energy with the drums at 2:45

There is some wild shit going down in this pet market. Absolutely nailed that cheesy sci fi vibe without the track sounding cheesy

This progression is adventurous and mysterious! Love these timbres too! Really fit the description all around.

This one hits hard! I love how it builds, and how the synths are all layered.  Great job!

grand futuristic soundtrack. Love the ballance between classical elements and the heavy synth and drumparts.

When I was a kid we would receive little flyers for ordering books every month in school, I would immediately flip to the back page to find the cheesy space adventure books while everyone else looked at whatever the popular stuff was on the front page. This brings me right back to what I wanted to experience with those books, great stuff!

Play #54, had not noticed the chord there, so tasteful

Yep, I am repressing my inner nerd. As I start a snobby intellectual classic guitar track, it whispers "hey i am suuuure adding an arp synth will complement the guitar" or "some vangelis strings sound just like classic music, go for it". There's no fighting it.

Thank you! Actually I was kinda bothered by the chord progressions on this track, as it's basically the same over and over and over, with just different things happening on top of it. smile

Yes, we all have to accept that in our heart we are still little kids who want to go do space pirate stuff.

Ah very good catch on the name opportunity, and the incorrect denomination of moon. Thank you for the feedback! smile

I struggled with this one, but after adding 2 electric guitars hard panned, it finally gelled. They are actually not really that audible, but it's surprising how much of a difference they make to give scale. Good learning there.

Thank you! Ah yes, that high pitch/feedback thing - I wish I could say "i recorded it by standing in front of a marshall pushed to the max" but really it's this synth template called "Speedbike race" in FLEX. It's quite unruly but can get very interesting.

Merci! En effet, j'ai eu un peu la main lourde avec tous les samples, et peut etre que ca aurait beneficie de cleaner un peu le mix dans les 200-300Hz et un peu de sidechain compression sur la batterie.

Haha thank you! Let's do a collab on making SF character inspired tracks this year! I remember the first time I saw SF2 - it was in a bar in 1992, where there was this arcade in the back. And there, a guy was playing SF2 and it was the Claw/Vega stage. It was mesmerizing - the animation, the gameplay, the music!

I need to check it out, I am not familiar with that. Thank you! smile

Thank you, I really appreciate that. It's part of the fun of making tracks, right? They have their own story, their own life.

Thank you! smile Yep, you can get whatever you want. You want cyber monkeys? Interstellar jellyfish from gas planets? Translucent electric birds? They have it all!

Right? I get that feeling exactly! When I was a kid, I'd devour a comic called Valerian. They made a movie out of it recently but it was trash compared with the comic, how it was taking you to different planets, different species. Thank you!

Sorry, I was not listening, I am too caught in miraclemiles' track. smile

Man this track is over the top, the production is epic! the guitar is a nice contrast, did you play that live? Very cinematic. Great storytelling

The acoustic guitar was programmed. Between the weird chords and the relative complexity of the piece, it would have taken me a long time to learn it, and I'd have struggled to get it as clean as that. Whereas good old midi programming did the trick in a few minutes. I feel like I'm betraying my fellow guitarists.

Nah! It's all music.

this is really fun. the bass sounds awesome but I know it's not the star of the show, and that's OK. it's dense in parts, mysterious in others, and light in others still. there's so much going on, so many images. it's a real journey. it's so cinematic, and I'm trying to imagine what kind of show or movie this would be in, and what the scene it would be like. very enjoyable.

Mmmmm, those tasty slams again. This is the year of space tracks, and you have the epic cyberpunk spacey feel nailed down.

The drums have an awesome pace to them.  Love all of the synth sounds too.  The synth bassline is bad ass!  Really cool change of pace with the guitar midway.  Love how it slams back into Vangelis-like synths too.  Great job!

I love the sound and the execution and overall it's a great track. The synth melodies are cool, the vocal stuff is also super cool. The only thing that I wanna criticize because I think it would bring the piece to the next level is that the guitar sounding melody is a bit monotone/uncanny and it could use more feel or a second voice or something. How do you feel about it and how did you come up with it?

I've recently started studying a bit more seriously all this counterpoint stuff that they had figured out back in the 1700s, and I feel (from my super limited understanding of it so far) that this guitar melody of yours would be a perfect place to apply such learnings smile

Nice dude! The mix on this is excellent. You're dabbling in so many different sounds here and it works super well, I especially love the way you transition from one section to another. It's full of nuance, to the point where I think I'd need to listen to it over and over again just to study all the intricacies in the production.

Cinematic AF, but I admire thematic focus on sections of action & repose -- works flawlessly.
