The Arcadia

By Kedbreak136 on January 16, 2022 7:34 am

A track that started with a classic vibe, and then I took it to 80s goth at some point, and then to schizophrenic "let's put as many instruments as I can". I got some classic orchestra libraries, and it was a good exercise trying to combine the sounds and make something kinda credible. There are some parts I'm not super happy about - there are some interesting melodies here and there, but overall it's all a derivation of the main theme. The arrangement is a bit artificial and the intro/outro would welcome more ideas. But hey, a track is a track and I did learn a couple of things.

The name is based on Captain Harlock's Ship! The variety of atmospheres here gave me an impression of travel through space or even time. And Captain Harlock is super cool, so let's go with that.

I really dig the interlude around 1:40. The timing is great, a nice little break before you throw us head-first back into the main theme again.

This went a lot harder than I expected from the start of it!
Gives off character theme song vibes. A dramatic antihero! I guess that sums up Harlock

I wasn't expecting that beat the moment it came in and it's super bad ass, especially in combination with that piano. It actually gives me some strong vibes like it could be a track in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (aka, castlevania inspired game but more current).

great progression, very mysterious and mischievous. lead synth part absolutely kicks ass! shout out to space and piracy

Damn, this is awesome!  Very all over the place in a good way.  The outro hits so hard too!

Nice. Cool & Mystery Cartoon vibe

Lots of great textures to dig into here.  When that initial beat kicks in it's a pleasant surprise.

epic!

Like other said already, it doesn't wait much to kick in at 30 secs... smile

There are loads of cool ideas there, very cool little "Harp" solo at about 1m50.

And yes outrow is epic.

A masterpiece of arrangement. I can hear lot of "baroque" elements all over the track. very good job.

Ah bin oui. Tight track.
J'aime beaucoup le mood.

Myserious and quite bombastically energetic! Love it!

Wouldn't have picked where it would go after that intro, big change! Also really dig what happens around 1:40

Love how the theme gets introduced almost like it's being played in a courtyard on a loudspeaker and then BAM!  Excellent classical baroquish progression with that driving bassline.  Your tracks always have this awesome pace to them.  There's always something new around the corner.   The melody is super catchy along with those cool drums (especially the double bass kickin').  This theme def deserves a reprise or something along those lines.  I can hear a whole video game soundtrack coming out of this smile  Very inspiring!  The classical libraries sound awesome.  Is that from Spitfire or something else?

This track just keeps getting more epic as it goes on. Loved all the breakdown portions.
The gated percussion sounds really good too

spot on!  the wind sample & fx breakdown really ramped it up for me.  double kick drum sounds great.
incredible job!

Good times on this ships space voyage. I like how it change around a bit, nice how it breaks down. Good meolodies for sure. Feel like I heard similar melody to Hava Nagila in there.  I need to refresh my memory on Capt Harlock. Seems cool if this song could play on the ship!

Ah thank you. This (programmed) guitar idea was inspired by a great track from last week someone else (sorry I cannot remember) who had made this incredibly precise guitar piece. I loved the idea and wanted to try something out there.

Yes, I wanted to play with the dynamics a little there, with the hard hitting hard and the light being very sparse. Harlock's awesome!

Thank you! Right, I think the baroque vibe from some of the progressions is what makes it sounds like it could belong in that kind of universe.

Thank you! Space pirates, a theme that has not been exploited enough!

Drums is really the heart of a track.

And relistening to the track, I could have made that intro shorter considering the length of the whole track. I changed the intro quite a few times but could never really get it to work. I had seen a trailer for a star wars game where they were playing the main star wars hero theme super sparsely, suggesting it more than playing, before going full power. I have tried to recapture that effect but not there yet.

Baroque guitar! smile

I had not consciously identified the baroque element but once you said it, it clicked. I am thinking maybe there is some more space baroque music to make.

I feel there is something in this track that could be exploited in a better way. The classical libraries are the Woodwind ensemble and the Strings ensemble from the Symphony series by Native Instrument. There is also a stradivarius cello library from NI again (though it's a bit overkill considering what I do with it) and I believe I used Arkhis for the intro.

Like a few ideas that kinda are drafty but could be developed better in the future. I may have to come back to it... BUT as miraclemiles pointed out:

THAT'S IT. I knew it. I knew it reminded me of something but could not pin it. It's Hava Naguila. Now I cannot unhear that. I just checked and it's now in the public domain, but that's too bad. I must have picked up that melody unconsciously, have forgotten where it came from and used it into a space pirate track. Now the images that the track triggers are all mixed up. that's the problem with using melodies that pop up into my mind. I always have the nagging feeling this could be actually something that already exists and I'm just plagiarizing it.

Thank you so much for your nice feedback!

Epic soaring eagles! (last week tigers, this week eagles!) Great soundtrack to an epic fantasy anime or game. The drums rock!

Great impact when the song kicks in and I like how it's kind of a metal beat with the kicks and all. The plucked interlude is nice.  The end is cheesily good.  Haha.

Impressing big sound and it's an exciting story! This 2:07 is my favorite. Nice song!

That slam at the start hit so well. Incredible. Buildups are one of my favorite things to hear in songs. The way this track peels awap parts then ramps up set my brain on fire. What all did you use for the slam around 2:35? I usually just pile instruments together, but it never sounds like this or the movies.

Damn, this goes hard, I kinda wished the piano wasn't drowned out, but it also kinda shines in its diminutive nature, overseeing the carnage.

I bought recently a pack of animal samples, I need to amortize it. smile

Yes absolutely, pure metal beat. It's from a metal drums sample pack! smile

Your tracks sound very good, man! The slam at 2:35? - checking my mix - - it takes forever to load, too many samples - Haha, looking at it I went heavy handed there. On top of couple of crashes, there are FOUR different Impact/Hits kind of sounds there - all super sized kicks that bring a lot of oomph and dynamic when coming from a quiet section.

Thank you! Yes indeed, the mix is a bit heavy and the piano does not shine much - maybe i should try playing with that.

Hava Nagila has never sounded cooler. And yes that sample is a red-tailed hawk not an eagle smile

It actually indeed is an hawk sample. Did you just mean that as a joke or are you actually able to tell birds apart from their voices?

Not all birds! but for biological enthusiasts in California, yes the running joke is that majestic bald eagle you hear in the SUV commercial is actually the much more common red-tailed hawk. Eagles are heckof squeaky!

I love the execution and how powerful the voices come together. The melody is basically Hava Nagila but it has some nice twists smile the dynamics in the track are also something else! lots of tension points and satisfying release. thanks for this track!

and double thanks because I discovered this completely ridiculous Harry Belafonte recording of it because of your track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTCmKmofaKA
