Tempest

This week, I took an old song that I had been kicking around for 20 years and tried to reinterpret it in a classical/romantic fashion. I have played this song in I don't know how many bands, but it was always in a drums/bass/guitar style, and it always felt like it could reincarnate into something very different with some orchestral elements.

After sharing the track with some of my bandmates, their comment was "it's the bastard son of that old track we had and Pirates of the Carribbean". Which is a fair description. It's also a check on the improvement that I have felt since doing weekly beats - ability to mix better, compose better, and just do better tracks overall. And, most important, the ability to FINISH TRACKS, which was fundamentally lacking in my past.

I kinda enjoyed this track though it's a bit ham fisted. Maybe I'll revisit in some years when I have improved more, to clean up the mix (as it's muddy now, and it lacks the orchestral depth I was looking for), and also to bring some more variations to the melodies. But I'm happy about this track this week.

Guess I'll add it also sounds a bit like it'd fit Donkey Kong Country 2. I really like it, but if you're looking for pointers, I'd say maybe double check the brass section. Not sure what it is, but it feels off somehow, also the french horn should maybe have more to do.

Other than that, it's epic, a wild ride in a theme park.

I like the idea of having tracks you can come back to and imagine/reimagine/revise every few years as a marker of changes in skill or creative expression or whatever. Would be interested to hear a version that has the depth you're looking for - I like the feel of this even as it is (particularly the way you wrap it up - that's a nice surprise) so would be fun to hear something even bigger.

Love the way this piece soars once it gets going. Especially impressive work with the strings at the 1:55 / 2:30 marks!

The pizzacatto is great! Glad you could finally get this guy orchestrated!

Wow, epic piece of music, really cool how you have revisited and reinterpreted this over the years, like how the energy and crashing waves/wind pick up before the final rush.

you can be very proud of this track. it has an awesome cinematic quality and a dynamic range. supergood.

Seagull sounds is an instant download. That wood creaking effect is also delicious. I love how the drums change to match the rhythm of those horns. Epic.

Oh my god the metal section at the end. Hellll yeah.

I like the brass writing in this the most, and I think orchestras sound fundamentally busier (and imo muddier) than this. smile

This track shines with timeless beauty, in epic feelz... like a daunting and brave journey into the eye of the storm heart

I like the music overlaid on creaking noises and waves and seagulls! fair points on the orchestral depth, it's hard to do without an actual orchestra I guess. Maybe needs more dynamics in general? so there is room to go louder from the more quiet parts. But that being said this is on a very high level already! Amazing job!

Love the drama that comes in with the full orchestration. I could see this being great for a Game of Thrones style intro for TV or Movie. The metal rockestra in the last third is badass! Would like to hear some of the other elements drop away to let that section go full rock/metal arrangement!

It's always kind of cool to revisit old material.  This really has an epic vibe.  Love all the creaking boat noises and ocean sounds as well.  The end takes a surprising turn, but it fits well.

What an epic swashbuckling Tempest of a piece - WOW!

Love the epic feels throughout this epic track.  The strings/brass sound great imho.  The drums mixed with the fx really give such a cinematic feel too.  Then the beat picks everything up towards the end ooof yais! Excellent work!

Epic fun! impressed by the strings and horns, great work there. The rock end was grand! Nicely done. What instrument did you play back in your old rock band days?

Thank you for the hints! I'll check these in a future iteration. The flute also sounds off to my ear, I might ditch it.

It's the music version of the drawings comparison we see on instagram "a dog when I was 12 years old, and now a dog when I was 20 years old". Thank you for the comment!

Oui j'ai eu du mal sur cette fin. C'est pas facile de mixer les guitares. J'ai rajoute les cuivres parce que justement les guitares sonnaient pas bien. Un element sur lequel je pourrai revenir dans une version future. smile

Thank you! I think I'll need to continue studying how orchestras work. I still do it in a very basic way, not using many articulations or dynamics enough but that's a start. smile

Yes I think the track would benefit from more dynamics especially on the strings and horns - from different articulations to dynamic volume. Good tip! Thank you!

Maybe I'll revisit it and do the version as we always played it live. Much less romantic, much more metal.

Thank you! I used to play a weird guitar - a fretless guitar with a fuzzfactory (a crazy unruly fuzz pedal) directly stuck to the body of the guitar. That specific song was quite a challenge because playing arpeggios on a fretless was really a pain! But that was fun!
