Fireflies

By Kedbreak136 on March 10, 2024 12:59 pm

Another week with little inspiration and even less time to do music. I'm burning out on work, and it has impacts on the energy I can spend on music.

My youngest has been watching again and again The Grave of the Fireflies. I can never watch this anime, much too hard to handle. One of the scenes at the beginning has bombers flying over the towns and the kinds flying the bombs. This track was inspired by that, but unfortunately it feels just like a draft, with very little time to really decently work on it. It's ok, it's ok, a track is a track.

Sorry to hear about the work burnout. That's the worst. Glad you're able to carve out time for music though. Hopefully that helps a little.

Grave of the Fireflies is an incredible movie that I never want to watch again because the ending is heart wrenching. Your tune definitely captures that building tension.
I so feel ya on the work burnout. So many things throughout the year act as obstacles to our creativity, so I'm glad to hear you're still keeping up with it regardless. Hope things chill out soon!

I haven't seen that movie, but hear it's traumatic.  I definitely get a warzone feeling from this.  Sorry work has been so rough.  That's the worst.  Hope you're able to hang in there and that it'll lighten up a bit sooner rather than later, or that there's at least a light at the end of the tunnel.

Hey, ya a track is a track, and this is a track, and I enjoyed it. Maybe didn't have all the same polish flourish as the grade A top shelf Kedbreak track, but its good bones. Those strings have such emotion and drama, its all very cinematic. I haven't seen that anime, but I'm creating one in my head. The piano is great balance and the drums are intense. Sorry work is intense, I hope it gets better soon. When will employers learn that burning the team out is never in anyone's best interest?!

I have no clue what the film is about. But you painted a realistic scenery musically, what proves, it is more than a track that you call just a track. It tells a story. Well done.

Sorry to hear about burnout. Hope you can take the steps to reduce it and heal. It just takes time. Nice that you keep making the tracks. I guess at this point you're in it for so long it's not even a discussion. But it's wonderful to witness.

The music is fantastic, so many things going on, beautiful orchestration, and the use of samples and storytelling as always is nice. I like the reverse "whoop" sound in some transitions, the vinyl noise in the start, the strings... the warzone samples, so many things! I can see the inspiration from the movie, I only started watching it for a few minutes twice, and I couldn't continue. One day I will, gotta have the energy for it.

I can't tell if you are reusing a lot of motifs in your tracks but I have a feeling that you have a particular type of melody you go for, I can hear it a bit at the end in the cello. It's not a bad thing, actually it's kinda nice that it's not so easily noticeable. It establishes your style among other things. I'm curious if you're accepting it and sometimes falling into what comes easy, or are you continuously challenging yourself to not be repetitive in your compositions. Especially valid when you don't have much time for a track, cause that's when you can see what someone's REAL bread and butter is. On second listen I can hear it also in the piano melody after the big bomb.

Thanks for sharing!

I could tell from the title and the explosions what this was about.

Honestly, your songs always go so very hard, perhaps it's okay to dial your life back a bit. Unless you find refuge in music, then definitely keep at it.

Even under tight time constraints, this track came out with a strong sense of narrative and progression. Nice work! Grave of the Fireflies is a heartbreaking movie but definitely a powerful one too.

I haven't seen the anime but just judging from the track alone it must be heavy. Your song evokes the anguish strongly. Great job!

That sucks that you're burned out on work sad but man, this track is super epic. I really enjoyed it!

Music definitely helps but it feels like i'm lost in a deep subterranean maze right now and I need some light. Hopefully very soon! smile

Thank you! Yes, I got some news yesterday with some more members joining the team, that should make my life more focused! At last!

To be fair, I did it on myself, joining a startup that is as chaotic as you can imagine, and also jumping in when people help. I need to learn to say no. smile Thank you for your kind comment!

Thank you very much! It is a movie about 2 Japanese kids who run away bombings during the second world war, and strive to survive hunger, despair, etc. And i will not spoil the end but it's not a fun family movie, but it is deep and so very humane, highlighting that regardless whose side we're on, war is the most horrible creation of mankind.

Oooooh what an interesting comment and acute observation! This is actually something I thought a lot across the years of doing tracks. I do indeed have the tendency to repeat patterns - at the melody level, at the chord level, and even at the whole track structure level. This is due to a lot of things: having to do a track per week, forgetting past tracks, also that I do not plan my tracks but just sing vocally and transcribe them (my voice is centered on D, that's why so many tracks are in D, and I like nostalgic feels, hence the D minor). So I have noted the repettions and wondered - what should I do about it? The first thought is - what is wrong about repetitions? In some music styles, that is actually a theme, that can be common (as long as I don't steal from someone else). It is also a bit like comfort food, these melodies and patterns are like a warm blanket that make me feel at ease, and make everything stream more smoothly. However, sometimes I crave going out of my comfort zone and expanding into new things, learning new skills, and trying to get inspired by music I do not normally play and melodies i usually do not normally think about.

There is a time for extravagant exotic food, and a time for a nice simple hamburger. smile

Thank you very mych! smile

Daaaang this totally evokes the warzone feels.  From the air raid siren to the mournful strings and percussion I feel it all.  I hope things are calming down for you soon and are feeling recharged.  Thank you for continuing to inspire.

I want to watch this movie but it sounds so devastating.

This track is kind of painful, honestly.  The explosions are brutal.  Really makes me think of 1917 which has a soul-crushing soundtrack.

Is that movie too much for a young one maybe?  yikes!

horatiu's comment is spot on, not a bad thing - just there is a "kedbreak aesthetic" at times

doing your thing = refining the style
doing something new = expanding the range

i think both are good.
