M8+TD3: Acid Downtempo

By jimmac on April 2, 2022 9:36 am

Apologies for bailing on proper track making yet again. Acid downtempo jam for rescue. Hooked up the td3 to the m8 for the first time.

Beat loop sample from Jungle Jungle I believe.

Couldn't figure out how to mix it properly, so apologies for headphone wearing folk. It really does come out the left channel only big_smile After checking in with the nice folks on discord I found out there is a hidden column next to the input levels in the mixer page that does enable the dual mono input.

with that beautiful beat dead-center, i thought it was all intentional big_smile sounds great in headphones(like it will echo through my head even after it's done big_smile)

I think it sounds pretty good in headphones also. This sounds like busy/organic era jimmac, so obviously I like this a lot.

Goes to show how subjective 'proper track' really is. I think a lot of the best stuff is just off the cuff and done in the moment to meet a deadline or make a buck.

Great track - if you continue bailing on properness, we'll all be fine.

bailing on proper track? what do you mean? this is awesome. if this doesn't count as a proper track then I'm in trouble big_smile

It's great to see the M8 being used for some epic breakbeat adjustments. This is my main reason for wanting to get one, and it's great to see how awesome it does the job.

I love the acid bassline you have going on. Any recommendations on how to get better at composing them? I am still trying to figure it out.

TD3 + M8 = Excellent.  And that hidden column is brilliant.

Thanks for the compliments. I really embrace the chance with everything I do. When I mentioned proper I really just menat significant time investment in polishing a track with proper transitions and ear candy and everything. Just rolling with imperfections in a one take is scary, I suck at it, but it's so liberating to just call it done. No way to fiddle with it forever.

I feel absolutely weird giving tips on music to anyone. I am a forever rookie. But since you asked for baseline tips -- I wouldn't even dare to sequence it on the device itself. That process is equal to programming a mainframe in the 60s.

I just like to loop a pattern, put down some emphasized tones and fill the grid with fillers that are an octave or even two down. I don't remember how slides are done on the td3, but the accents are solely based on volume/velocity.

It's just like you say. I was out of time and couldn't waste time not improving it smile

There's an imperfect beauty in one playthrough tracks but I get what you mean.

Thanks for the suggestions about basslines! I have the TB03 and has a more modern sequencing option. That OG pattern programming option...jeez. What a mess.
