I had a thing in mind with this but I don’t know what it was. I wrote the little lilting swells first and they reminded me of something… then, because I couldn’t put my finger on it, that something haunted me the rest of the week. I couldn’t remember what it was I was remembering and I couldn’t find the source anywhere after going through the entirety of my trance collection. Maybe it was here? I hope I didn’t rip anyone off, but if I did, please let me know.

I’m traveling, so this was done entirely on an M8. Most parts of the M8 are delightful. But something I have real trouble with is finding a way to automate, say, the amount of filter envelop on a 303-like patch. The envelope is great. And there’s a way to use another ENV or LFO to modulate ENV amount. And all the trigger FX to kick off when you want them in the arrangement. But in practice I spend too much time trying to get them to work, and then when I come back the next day, I’ve forgotten all of what I did, and then I miss one and some filter is opening exponentially throughout the track and…

I guess to sum up, I like where this ended up. But I wish there was more movement and that it was more deliberate. And I might have stolen the whole thing from somewhere.

Found it! Wasn’t an album at all, it was the (semi-generative) soundtrack from the first stage of Rez I was thinking of. I don’t think my homage does it justice, though. So if you have access go back and give it a play. Soooo gooood!
