The challenge I set for myself this week was mixing into distortion. Sometimes I want to dirty up a track, but after a week of listening to it pristine, all I can hear when I add grunge are the losses. So this week the very first thing I set up was an Analog Heat at end-of-chain with the not-very-clean Mid Drive circuit engaged. Everything I patched after that, I only heard after already shredded. So I didn’t miss the bits left lying on the floor. The hardest part was keeping mid resonances under control given the amount of boost being applied by the Heat. But I’d definitely do it again. Lots of fun.

On the other side of the Heat was an Octatrack (drums), Digitone (bass), and Analog Four (synthy stuff), everything captured in a single take. I spent the whole time with one hand on a QPER and the other on a crossfader, but I think it came out pretty nice.

That's a cool idea.

I used to mix into limiter (take a bit of a hybrid approach now), but I've never tried mixing into drive.

Everything sounds suitably FILTHY!

The guitar moment took me by surprise. Like an 80's action film where there is tension then something dramatic happens.
