Techno is hard! Every time I try it, it somehow manages to be both boring *and* too complicated? I need to study more reference.

The stabs are from a System-1, the bass from a DB-01, and the Samples From Mars — all mixed through an Octatrack. I was really feeling the “live performance” and “use it like an instrument“ bug with this, but I’m simply not nimble enough to tweak and manage mutes/transitions/etc yet. I thought I might be able to set up the Arranger to manage all that for me, but the polymeter of the stabs got in the way. So I fell back to recording tracks one at a time with tweaking, then arranging everything in Logic.

It’d be nice Octatrack would get a bump to let us resample whole tracks like the 404mkII. Gigs of flash is probably cheaper than the CF assembly and IDE bus these days. I know, limitations, creativity, and all that. And I believe it.

But still; fingers crossed!

Favorite part is the way you used that "okay" sample; that did sound live. cool

Confirmed! The way people tend to dump on techno for being formulaic and computer-based, you'd think there'd be a generative preset for it in every DAW―but it turns out that's where the creativity and craftsmanship starts. It seems like the all good techno I've heard over the years sounds incredibly alive and individual.

This is so true! It's a long road ahead, but I'd love to get even a piece of that. And, I suppose, working it out one song a week can't hurt smile

So, funny story! I accidentally had the left channel of my desk phase inverted while recording all of this. So if you're listening through headphones, cool. But if via loud-speakers (or, heavens, a mono smart speaker or phone) my most humble apologies; it will be jank.

Not overly complex or repetitive.  I would love seeing this live! Great energy.  The stereo effects are awesome.
