Ice Cream Rainbow

By jegasus on January 21, 2024 8:31 pm

No rap this week, folks! I apologize for the fake out, hahahaha... I just really got into this little upbeat chiptune that feels like what you would hear if a bunch of toy soldiers came to life and had a parade along a rainbow made out of ice cream.

This was 100% made on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker. Also, this was made using exclusively internal synths that I created myself - no instrument presets or samples were used. Sound design doesn't come naturally to me, so I feel that it's tough to come up with clever (and good sounding) instruments. I'll try to keep up the "all-DIY" instruments whenever possible!

Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this week's odd little entry. And keep your eyes (and ears) peeled, because there is definitely more rap & comedy stuff coming up.

Cheers!!!

Cute as. Nice!

good stab at sound design and fun bop!  some nice variety of sounds here.  BTW it helps to have days that are just for sound design, with no real expectation to have to use those sounds towards a particular song.  One tip also is that you may want to try changing oscillators mid-sound using a table -- that opens up a wealth of new sonic possibilities.

I dig the lead's melody, and the transitions between the various sections.  The transition at 00:42 feels particularly great.

Cute dancey robot war!

cool! I like that you challenges yourself to do an in the box, synth only piece!

bring on the 80s anime lazer sounds!

ah one more thing: when it comes to instruments on M8, do NOT miss out on tables, and also explore speed 0 tables!

Reminds me of different kinds of game music. The melody of a peaceful area of a jrpg and the drums and bass of a hard-paced racing game.

no need to apologize, this is a great track! really nice melodic lead, plays well with the bassline and the chippy drums.

Very yummy little treat.

Thanks for the tips! I just recently started exploring the "changing oscillators mid-note" thing - it's surprisingly effective!!! My issue with those sound design sessions is that I get lost in making weird sounds that are barely usable in music, hahahaha... And when I find something that might me aurally pleasing, I don't save it into any preset folder or anything. I just need to make a habit of saving stuff after my explorations.
Anyways, thanks again for the listen and tips!!!

Thanks!!! I've been trying really hard to do sound design from scratch in most of these WB tunes - so far it's been pretty good! I really need to explore the FM synth more, tho.

Thanks for the listen and hints!!! And yes, I've been messing around with tables, they can be super trippy!!! Intimidating at first, but they unlock A LOT of functions.

Yeeeeah!!! I used to love me a good jrpg when I was younger. I think their influence is coming through here in this tune, hahahahah... Thanks for listening!

I mean, after the stuff I wrote for the "Rap Diary" tune, I do feel like I need to apologize thoroughly to humanity as a whole... Hahahahaha... But thank you!!!
