The Grey Cascade

By Janky Jams on April 12, 2026 8:56 pm

Not a live jam this time. Been doing a few sound design sessions this week to recreate some iconic synth sounds I enjoy, but in the end I found myself unable to make anything with those that didn't sound like the track I was imitating... So I tried something new.

The process for this one was pretty different from my usual: I started with a short two-bar melody on the Lorn lead patch I had been working on, and then ran that through PaulStretch to create a massive ambient pad. Then I ran that back through my rack to add trance-gate-like gating, recorded drums from the rack, another chord pad track from Helical, and added a few vocal samples in Ableton.

Since it wasn't a live performance, here's some ambient video shot from my studio's balcony today.

Really cool to hear a track away from your synth wall. Many new colors and timbres right off the bat. I believe this is the 2026 premiere of Janky vocals? We needed that added to the WB arsenal.

Really cool, clean quality as always. You know your shit.

Bring on the TRANCE GATE! This is such a fun submission smile The little percussive bits sprinkled in sounded great.

I just learned what a trance gate is and that I love it. Awesome piece!

Hectic with the staccato synth from get-go, sets up the pace nicely and oriental ablibs smooth out the rest. Breaks really take a backseat in this one, not a bad choice. Creates an interesting contrast.

Great forward-driving trance gate, evened out by great drums and rhythmic hats.
I totally dig this.
The vocals add a lot of soul!
Hnng!

Man alive! Very powerful

Nice work getting out of the comfort zone. I love the vocal on this. Where are you sourcing vocals?

Thanks! I'm using Output Arcade for vocal samples. It's a subscription, but cheap enough to try out and see if it's for you!
