WB 01 - Rain

By Jamatar on January 1, 2020 10:20 am

Woo! First one of 2020! So I'm getting my philosophies straight for this 2020 WB. Even though I only did 50% of 2018's WB, it was a massive success for me, I got a full EP out of it as well as tons of other tracks that found their own homes in indie projects and games.

I'm keeping it free and easy this year. Writing everything from my couch with a laptop and a bluetooth keyboard. Dog sleeping on my leg as I write smile

I'm also not going to stress about completing melodies and lead lines and overloading everything, as I know I'm going to come back to this stuff later.

So this track I'm writing in Cubase 10.5 with some nice fancy new toys and some proven favourites. The main synth is TAL-U-NO-X with a new Valhalla delay plugin that is very, very excellent and warm.

I got some sort of rompler lofi hiphop piano I saw on an instagram ad and it's actually very good! Lots of inspirational sounds to start a project with.

Today I bought the Korg Wavestation plugin as 2018 I had such a great time with the JV2080 that I wanted a wave rompler to play around with in the box. I'll crank out the JV later in the year once I get my studio tidied up.

For bass, I'm using the trusty Arturia Mini V to emulate my Behringer Model D. Later, I can run it through hardware if I need. It's very accurate, but not as giant and gooey as the real thing.

Lastly, I'm using Retroplug, the very, very excellent Gameboy Emulator that Tom here in Melbourne wrote that lets you run Gameboy roms right in your DAW. I'm using it to emulate MGB so later I can take it to hardware.

But for now, it's all about getting in front of the computer. Everything in the box. Just a midi keyboard and ASIO4all running off the in built soundcard. Not even an interface for now!

Great to be back, hope you have a fantastic year, 2020's the year of the TUNES!

Nice stuff. Sometimes I wish doing everything in the laptop worked for me, but I need hardware to get inspired...great results anyway.

Had me at the lovely arps and chord progression right away.  I wish I could work on my music from the couch tongue  I'm always craning my neck awkwardly and stiffening up at my desk haha.  The bassline with those synth stabs are a suhweet combo!

I feel you dude! I'm totally forcing myself to do this, but it's kind of working. I usually fall back to my my hardware synths for that definitive "tone" but to be devils advocate, by the time I'm up to mixing, I couldn't do an A&B between hardware and software and tell you the difference tongue PLaying it however....
