Hey, There's Portals!

By Jai Cafarella on February 11, 2024 5:17 pm

I clumsily wrote the base piano idea for this in 2016 while visiting my children, so I tidied it up and built on it with some further instrumentation and used a short modified sample from the original phone recording for effect ("hey, there's portals!").

I wanted the piano to sound cold and distant to mirror the feeling of missing my children, and I was going to leave it as just piano, sample, choir and 'clarinet' (synth equivalent of), but the 'its missing something' feeling bugged me and at the last minute I added the synth bass and vocals after humming it to myself during playback.

No major breakthroughs in production learning this week, just another classic super last minute thingy to avoid falling off the wagon so soon, and also converting one more random idea to a song (of sorts).

Pretty, sad and the 'kitty' sound is cool lol. A nice stripped back performance, but not empty if ya know what I mean? Enough parts to fill the song, not enough to take over the original idea.

Full, but hollow. Very cool. A little creepy too with the high pitched voice.
