All For Nort

By Jai Cafarella on February 6, 2022 9:13 pm

So... this was quite the experiment.  I tried to do a few things I haven't attempted before all in one go, and typical me, started hours before deadline again sad

As it began coming together, I started steering it towards something I could imagine being part of an 80's Sci-Fi film, such as Tron. The experiment was... semi-successful, although I feel mixed on how the syncopated elements work (or don't work) with the straight elements, and probably went a bit overboard on the washy verbs, but things were learnt, so it's not all bad.

I tried convincing myself the messy mush breeds a mood of unease to potentially suit a moment in a film of that vibe, but really it just sounds like I don't really know what I'm doing tongue

You can never go too far with washy verbs, but i reckon you still got the vibe of what you were trying to accomplish across, so that's always a success!! I do seem to remember you on saturday saying no last minute this week though lol

I like what you're going for. At 52sec I found my mind screaming for all the elements to fall inline for a bit. My uneducated opinion (not that you asked lol) is that maybe bringing all rhythmic elements together for a section would make the lack of alignment in other parts even more uneasy, as on some lower level of consciousness listeners would have a yearning for more of what "could have been".

Loving the delays and verbs. Your mix covers a large amount of space in my mind. I can feel my ears trying to follow the pulses as they fade into the distance.

you had me at Tron.  I like it!  could work as a trailer score.

I'm still dipping my toe in the reverb pool, most of my preferred music is fairly light-medium on verbs, so anything beyond that is uncharted territory for me. But like we've said, that's what WB is for.

Wow, call me out much? tongue Yes, yes, I did SAY that, but y'know... ehe...

It actually had a steady beat early on, but it was sounding too similar to a track I did for last Weekly Beats, so I stripped it right back to try and distance any comparison, with the intention of building it up towards the end, but because I left it so last minute (again), I scrapped that. So yeah, I agree, I think stripped back disjointed beginning, then gradually working towards a complete rhythm would help sell the discomfort of the beginning. Like minds and such smile

Thank you! I had NO idea what was happening in TRON as a kid, but it looked and sounded so cool smile  Ah yeah, I can imagine it working for a trailer (with some tidying).
