Bend and Break Me

By Jackmsimpson on May 9, 2026 10:13 pm

The return of sad-emo-jangle!

Really liked writing this one. It was one of those tracks that kind of falls out of you - jamming a chord progression and then some lyrics and a melody kind of come out of nowhere... half an hour later, the bulk of a song is written.

Still in open C, but with a slight tweak, with the highest string tuned to a D... no reason. I don't even remember doing it... but I like it.

Thanks as always for listening - any and all comments welcome!

Lyrics:
Im staring at the ceiling
Think what do i believe in
All those words you used to say

When I try to shout out loud
Whispers come out
It's always the same

All those places that we went
I dream of it again
To go back some day

And if I ever feel the truth
The fullness of you
I know I'll stay

We'll drive ourselves crazy
Caught up in a daydream
Bend and break me
...
Holding onto hope again
Push the walls further away
Be worth saving

Clear my mind open my heart
Ready to start
Ready to feel something

Another breath another day
An empty moment away
To forget The pain

I keep thinking of you
I dream that it is true
I want to stay

We'll drive ourselves crazy
Caught up in a daydream
Bend and break me

Mega-jangle-break

We'll drive ourselves crazy
Caught up in a daydream
Bend and break me

More jangle gold, love checking what you do every week.

Favorite part of this one is that my ear was sort of expecting some manner of lift on the "we'll drive ourselves crazy" section, a take it to the IV sort of thing - but the chord you used there was complex and tasty. A sonic feeling of "it's complicated". I think that D in your open C is doing the Lord's work smile

Missed one of your ripping solos in this, but it's still so good - would be right at home as a B-side from Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend album.

Thanks for coming back each week to listen! It means a lot! And thanks for the kind words too! I tried some solo ideas over the bridge section - which I think feels like it drags on a little as it is... but couldn't quite get anything to sit!
