Missing You (Trash80 Cover)

By iHz on March 27, 2022 4:20 pm

I got permission from Trash80 to post a cover of Missing You for Weekly Beats this week.

This is going to be kind of long - lots of feelings below lol. Apologies for that!

Missing You has a lot of meaning to me. When Trash80 released the Icarus EP, I was struggling with depression for the first time in my life and it really helped me get through some rough times. That was also the first time I'd heard chiptune music that sounded like (for lack of a better term) "real" music. Icarus EP inspired me to buy my first LSDJ cart. I farted around with it for ~5 minutes before putting in a drawer. A few years later, I decided to give trackers another shot with MilkyTracker. I had no idea what I was doing but managed to fart out a cover of "Missing You". It's not great but it was the first track that I ever released/uploaded to the internet.

I wanted this track to be a tribute to Trash80 and all of his contributions - music, software/hardware projects like the arduinoboy and, of course, the Dirtywave M8, Weeklybeats, etc... I made it a point to do everything on the M8 and put the wavesynth engine to work. This track was built & rendered entirely on the Dirtywave M8. The only external processing was trimming silence at the beginning & end of the track in audacity. The drums are samples from [url=https://samplebrowser.bandcamp.com/album/sample-browser-vol-2]this sample pack[url]. The rest of the instruments are wavesynth instruments created by me - mostly pretty basic square waves. I heart square waves.

When I started getting back into creating chiptune music again last year, I was going through another massive bout with mental illness. Creating music has been one of the few outlets that has helped me. Weeklybeats has specifically been a great outlet & goal to work toward each week. The power & portability of the M8 has dramatically helped with my mental health and helped me grow as an artist.

Sorry for the long description! I hope you enjoy this track and I hope that it does justice to the original!

Great arrangement and sounds, nicely done! heart

Thanks so much!

Its incredible how you make that chip lead sound so lyrical and expressive.

Oh man, I love this song and that EP definitely kickstarted our musical making interest to the point of joining WB'12 at the tail end and never stopping since. Chiptune has always been key in our stuff, also because the sound of a square wave just hits right.

This version is definitely better than the one from a decade ago, so you're definitely getting better.

Man, that was a banger EP, it's 14 years old but we're still listening to it. Our favorite song is Sodium Sonet, but haven't tried making a cover of it so far.

I realized I never did manage to work through my comments. I suffer from both anxiety and depression, which seem to have little regard for how well things are going "on paper." Not sure if sharing this is helpful, but if you ever need to reach out to someone, don't hesitate.

The tune's great, kind of a sad tune if it wasn't for that beat. heart

Thanks! Yeah, I still find myself listening to Icarus EP somewhat regularly haha.

Thank you! I absolutely know what you mean about the depression & anxiety not caring about how well things are going "on paper". Kinda feels like the story of my life haha. Likewise, if you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to hit me up!
