Soulmates

By horatiuromantic on February 6, 2022 9:38 pm

Do you believe in soulmates? How does it work? When can you be certain you have met yours? Is it always reciprocal?

In this song I explore the emotion of not knowing if the person you are enamored with loves you back, and a possible story of soulmates that lose each other or perhaps cannot see what they are.

I recorded it in one take, purely improvised, when I got home after a week of intense creative work with fellow weeklybeatmaker @atomtwist (btw, I play piano on his weeklybeat for this week, check it out).

Recorded on iPad with the ravencraft piano and applied a wonky tape effect to give it that sweet nostalgic feel. I played with some counterpoint melodies in the left/right hand (as I understand it from school 15 years ago, vague discussions and a few youtube videos). I only have one speaker as my other one is being repaired, so this was done on headphones and mono speaker, but in the end it doesn't really matter as the piano plugin does a pretty good job without even tweaking.

This piece is also somewhat inspired by Bach.

And of course dedicated to all those lost soulmates out there.

I've believed in soulmates since a space coyote told me to find mine.  That being said, its nuts that you were able to improvise this and get it out in one take.  So great ideas and moments in here.  You remember all the counterpoint rules though, or you mean just like counterpointish?  I probably crapped all that out of my brain like 3 hours after the final.

Wow, this is really incredible. Just lovely and meditative and thoughtful (improvised = thought...less? Hm.)

Soulmates is kind of a funny concept. I often wonder if, given the size of the world, we all have more than one. Like a spectrum of soulmates. A while back I wrote a story about a man who realizes he's found his soulmate when he discovers a way to explore his own past lives, but his soulmate doesn't have that knowledge so he's left wondering how to convey the weight of their relationship to a girl who only knows him as a customer at her cafe.

Can you hook me up with that space coyote lol
Thanks for the appreciation! I don't really know all the rules but I did watch some videos yesterday and I thought to myself - yea but when I break those rules they mentioned, it can still sound good. So I didn't give much shits about it but I do have to agree that some of those rules make sense. It's all about separating the voices and making it sound harmonious. Here I use the dissonance for the storytelling, dunno if it's obvious.

Thank you! I think the spectrum idea makes sense. It can't just be one, right? Your stories sound interesting smile Did you publish anywhere? Would you share?

Sweet tune smile

Super cool modal jazz meets baroque vibe!

That was beautiful to read! Thank you!

› spoiler about the short story linked above. read that first, it's really good

beautiful

I do not believe in soulmates, but I do believe that this piece is really, really beautiful.

very lovely piece. very humble and warm, with a little bit of yearning. sounds like some of my favorite randy newman songs-- all that's missing is the old man voice XD

skip to 2:30

then the story continues

Great to read about your process. A super solid improvisation, sounds fully fleshed-out. Love the change around 2:15 or so. Amazing what’s possible with iOS these days!

WOW

Thanks for the coyote! That was heartwarming! And thanks for the appreciation!

About piano skills: 6 years of after school piano lessons, then it's mostly self taught for approx 14 years by now, but I had good advice along the way. A good lesson I learned late in the process is that it shouldn't matter if you cheat. Just cheat all the way! By cheating I mean doing stuff that feels like you're taking the easy way out instead of doing it "proper", such as:
- playing in an easy key (just do it, play them white keys, it's more fun this way, nobody cares) (but I mean try to play in all keys to learn, but don't force yourself when you're past the annoyance/frustration point, practicing can be fun)
- using samples or programs that generate music or backing tracks or whatever. practice in style! have fun with it!
- do easy things such as play a little piano for 5 minutes when you can, you don't have to always do big 2 hour practice sessions. 5 minutes here and there for fun can actually improve your playing a lot!
- playing something in your own way, rather than the "correct way" (there is no wrong note in music. just different)
- play like you mean it - some people call this fake it till you make it - but play with confidence even when you know you did something wrong. in time you will learn to incorporate the "mistakes" into the music, so they're not mistakes anymore.
- ALWAYS keep tempo rather than stopping to get the right note in. makes it flow nicer for the audience and also trains your muscles to react better next time around if you're always in the flow. learn from the avantgarde music! they don't give a shit about anything, they just play with the raw emotion big_smile
- it all adds up in the end, and you'll eventually unlock all the things that you couldn't play before, so just go for it. sit down and play!

these are all tips for performing, but I think someone who is more into the composition aspect doesn't need to do any of this stuff except I guess the sampling one - that's pretty useful.

- oh yea final important tip: try to get as good an instrument as you can get, so you actually feel inspired and happy when you sit and play it. i.e. a real piano is best, otherwise one with HEAVY KEYS. nice speakers if you can, or just whatever you can do to get a good sound. I haven't realized the importance of sound until super late, but it makes you a better player when you can hear a good sound coming out of a single note.

So I live by the idea that any time I encounter a piano I am able to sit down and play something nice and the people around would appreciate it. this motivates me also to practice and get used to different keys, different styles, but I still tend to stick to jazzy-bluesy stuff.

These things sound basic to me now but at some point they were news to me. So hope they bring some new light for someone else too!

Thanks for reading this super long post big_smile

Thanks! Nice you noticed the modulation there, I also love how it turned out. It was scary at first cause I went from Bb (I think) to B minor but I quickly switched back heheh.

It's so beautiful and thoughtful

On the matter of soulmates, I believe they kinda exist, but there can be more than one. It sort of depends on what you're looking for in a soulmate, too, true love? best friend? A series of coincidences and overlaps?
